Wyoming basketball coach Larry Shyatt has resigned, with assistant coach Allen Edwards named his replacement.
Shyatt, 64, has coached at Wyoming for a total of six seasons split between two stints. His teams compiled an overall record of 117-78, including this year's team, which finished 14-18.
"This is not a decision that was made impulsively," Shyatt said in a statement. "Rather, it is a move that was arrived at after much soul-searching and discussion. I am ending my career here with the reluctant blessing of [athletic director] Tom Burman and the administration, and while they did their best to convince me to stay on, I believe that the timing of my decision is in the best interests of everyone involved."
Shyatt took over the Cowboys in the 1997-98 season but left after that season for Clemson. He returned to Wyoming in 2011 and led the Cowboys to the 2015 NCAA tournament, in which they lost to Northern Iowa in the first round.
Shyatt was an assistant for Billy Donovan at Florida from 2004-11. The Gators won back-to-back national titles in 2006 and 2007.
"We are extremely grateful to Coach Shyatt for what he has done for these past five seasons, in building Wyoming basketball into a program Cowboy fans are proud of," Burman said. "From leading his team to the Mountain West tournament championship and an NCAA berth last year to the academic success of the young men who have played for him, he has built this program the right way. We thank him and his wife, Pam, for their years of service to the University of Wyoming, and we wish them all the best in the next phase of their lives."
