Phil Mickelson to endorse, wear shirt brand he popularized at Masters

In his 27th year on the PGA Tour, Phil Mickelson just signed the most innovative endorsement deal of his career.

Mickelson has agreed to play while wearing the button-down, long-sleeve, performance-fabric shirt that had the internet buzzing when he donned it for a practice round at the Masters.

Mickelson will wear the shirt, made by Mizzen+Main, in exchange for an undisclosed stake in the company as well as cash.

"I like to be a trendsetter," Mickelson told ESPN.

The shirt turned the heads of players and fans alike when Mickelson turned up in one at Augusta National Golf Club in April.

"The only thing that was missing was a tie," Tiger Woods told him then.

Mickelson is expected to wear a long-sleeved dress shirt when he tees off in the second round of The Players Championship on Friday a group with Rickie Fowler and Woods. He has the short-sleeved option, as well, but plans to wear the company's dress shirts on the course.

Mizzen+Main founder Kevin Lavelle said the shirt Mickelson wears on the course will be the same that the company sells to its customers.

"Phil is one of the most well-known golfers of all time and loved by virtually every fan in golf," Lavelle said. "Having someone at this level demonstrate so clearly the performance capabilities of our dress shirts while competing is absolutely phenomenal."

This week, Mickelson signed the deal with the company, which has only one other athlete who owns an equity stake (Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt).

The shirts retail for $125.

Mickelson recently ended his win drought in March, taking the WGC-Mexico Championship for his first tournament victory in four years, seven months and 11 days.

His major endorsements include KPMG, Callaway, Workday and Rolex.
