Star Sixes: Picking an African Dream Team

Nigeria are Africa's sole representatives in the inaugural Star Sixes legends tournament in London this weekend.

The Super Eagles may have only reached the World Cup last 16 on three occasions, but the West Africans' six-a-side-team -- captained by Jay-Jay Okocha -- boasts the talent to trouble the other legend selections on show.

The presentation of Nigeria's Star Sixes squad has got the team at KweséESPN speculating on who would make a fantasy African all-time six-a-side team.

We've named one goalkeeper in our team, but beyond him, we've largely focused on a team that showcases the best of history's great offensive talent to have emerged from the African continent.

Note that we've limited our six-a-side dream team only to players who are still living and who represented an African nation at international level, so there's no place for legends such as Larbi Ben Barek, Eusebio or Doctor Theo Abega.

Essam El-Hadary: Classic stoppers such as Bruce Grobbelaar, Joseph-Antoine Bell, Kazadi Mwamba and Thomas N'Kono have just been pipped by El-Hadary, who was once described by Didier Drogba as his toughest ever opponent.

No one has won more Africa Cup of Nations titles than the Egypt stopper, and while he fell short of adding a fifth in Gabon earlier this year, his experience and leadership shone through during the Pharaohs' fine campaign.

On three times he's made the Nations Cup team of the tournament, and racked up a host of domestic and continental honours with Al-Ahly.

Samuel Kuffour: Although we promised we'd pick the finest African talents in history, we felt it would be a little too gung-ho not to provide El-Hadary with any defensive cover, so Ghana's Kuffour gets the nod to protect the Egyptian's goal.

The centre-back won the BBC African Player of the Year award and twice finished runner-up in the CAF award, while he won six Bundesligas, four German Cups and one Champions League title with Bayern Munich. How many other African players can point to such a long spell as a key figure at one of Europe's genuine giants?

Yaya Toure: While we're loath to leave out Nigerian greats Okocha and Nwankwo Kanu, we were keen to include a player who could link the defence and the forwards in our six-a-side team, and who would be the engine room for our side...at least when he's in the mood!

Michael Essien just misses out as even he can't match Toure's successes or his qualities. Could the Ghanaian have played so effortlessly in the centre of the defence as Yaya did in the 2009 Champions League final?

Essien certainly never came close to matching Toure's remarkable tally of 20 Premier League goals in the 2013-14 season.

Didier Drogba: Admittedly, perhaps the six-a-side game wouldn't play into his strengths necessarily, but it was impossible to overlook Drogba, who would contribute so much to our team.

The powerful forward was a talismanic figure for Chelsea during some of their finest triumphs, almost single-handedly winning the Champions League for the Pensioners in 2012 and winning four FA Cups.

George Weah: If you need convincing about the pure talent that Weah would bring to Africa's dream six-a-side team, just find a clip of the wondergoal he scored for AC Milan against Verona. There aren't too many players in the history of the game who could demonstrate that kind of technical quality.

Weah, a two-time African Footballer of the Year, is the only African player in history to win the Ballon d'Or. This alone surely makes him a shoo-in for our dream team.

Samuel Eto'o: This selection wouldn't be complete without Eto'o, arguably Africa's greatest player of all time. No player can match the kind of elite success that the Cameroon great enjoyed during his career, and often, he proved to be the difference-maker in the biggest games.

He's won three Champions Leagues - with Barcelona and Internazionale - and became only the second player in history to score in two finals. With the Indomitable Lions, he was part of the fine side that won two Nations Cups and Olympic gold at the turn of the century.

Could any opposition defenders ever relax with Eto'o starring for Africa's dream Star Sixes selection?
