Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg dramatically collided on the opening lap of the Spanish Grand Prix, taking both Mercedes drivers out of the race.

Polesitter Hamilton had a good start but was beaten into Turn 1 by a good move around the outside from Rosberg. Hamilton stayed close to his Mercedes teammate through the next two corners and looked to regain the lead on the run down to Turn 4, moving across to the right.

However, almost at exactly the same moment, Rosberg moved right to cover his teammate, forcing Hamilton on to the grass, where he lost control of his car and collided with the other Mercedes on the entry to the corner. Both cars came to rest in the gravel trap, with Hamilton resting his hands on his helmet before angrily throwing the steering wheel from the car.

The stewards confirmed they will investigate the incident after the race. Shortly afterwards, Hamilton and Rosberg were seen walking into the team's motorhome, followed later by team boss Toto Wolff and technical chief Paddy Lowe.

It was reminiscent of the pair's collision at the 2014 Belgian Grand Prix, though on that occasion Rosberg was the man trying to make a pass for the lead. The incident blew the race wide open, with the closely-matched Red Bull and Ferrari suddenly handed an opportunity for a race win which looked unlikely earlier in the weekend.
