While legendary Dutch playmaker Dennis Bergkamp never won the Mundial, he most certainly wrote his name into the competition's history by scoring one of the greatest goals ever witnessed in the World Cup.
It was a moment of majestic skill, as Bergkamp treated the watching world to a special glimpse of his exquisite genius.
The meeting between the Netherlands and Argentina in Marseille in the quarterfinals of the 1998 tournament in France was a star-studded affair.
The Dutch may have had the greater star power, but Argentina were a rugged, disciplined and determined unit who had overcome England following a dramatic contest and a penalty shootout in the previous round.
Bergkamp was bright from the off, and had almost set up Wim Jonk for the opener after forging space for himself and crossing for the midfielder to send his effort off the post.
He then set up Patrick Kluivert for the Dutch opener; killing the ball dead before playing in his strike partner to finish with aplomb past Carlos Roa.
Claudio Lopez equalised moments later, and Ariel Ortega was sent off late before Bergkamp's decisive intervention in the 90th minute.
First, the forward controlled a 70-yard pass from captain Frank de Boer with one touch, then beat Roberto Ayala with another -- also on his right foot -- as he succinctly closed in on the Argentine goal.
The non-Flying Dutchman then, almost in the same move, fired the ball into the roof of the net past the stranded Roa -- who barely had time to fathom what was happening -- as the Netherlands swept into the semis.
They would lose in the last four on penalties to Brazil, but Bergkamp had left his mark on the 1998 World Cup finals.
