Ghana's Frimpong finishes last in Skeleton heats

Ghana's Akwasi Frimpong, who has attracted a good amount of attention over his lion-and-rabbit helmet design, finished in last place after the first two heats of the men's skeleton competition in PyeongChang on Thursday.

The Ghanaian ended in 30th place after both runs, with times of 53.97 seconds and 54.46 seconds. Yun Sungbin, of Winter Olympics hosts South Korea, won both heats with times that were around four seconds quicker than Frimpong's.

Frimpong, who grew up in the Netherlands after leaving Ghana as a child, is a relatively new recruit to the skeleton scene, having tried his hand at bobsled before this, and was a talented youth sprinter before a serious knee injury ended that career.

His lack of experience was always going to count against him when competing against drivers with years on the tracks, and when KweséESPN spoke to his coach, Lauri Miller Bausch, earlier this year, she said he would be using these Games as a learning experience.

"Akwasi has the athleticism for a competitive push start and the potential to slide more competitively when he gains more experience," Bausch said at the time.

"Most athletes who will compete at the Games have slid six to 10-plus years while Akwasi is just in his second season. Success in this sport comes down to subtleties, which can take years to develop.

"He showed steady progress [in 2017] and the upcoming seasons I expect to see him show continual improvements."

Frimpong is on the start list for the third heat on Friday, while fans of Skeleton can also keep an eye out for Nigeria's Simidele Adeagbo, who will be competing in the women's event on Friday and Saturday.
