Connor Wilson will be South Africa's sole representative at the 2018 Winter Olympics after he qualified for the Alpine Skiing slalom/giant slalom event.
The 21-year-old Johannesburger was one of two South Africans who made the grade for the event, but the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) opted to go for the athlete with the superior ranking.
"Coming from a dry country like South Africa with extremely limited winter sport conditions, our teams to winter sports have traditionally always been small," SASCOC president Gideon Sam said.
"But, as we do in all our myriad sports, snow sports are still an important part of the sporting family. We wish Connor all the best and I'm also sure that Sive Speelman is going to gain a wealth of experience during his time in South Korea."
The Winter Olympics take place in PyeongChang, South Korea between February 9-25.
Wilson will be one of a number of African athletes competing at the event. The big drawcard is the Nigerian women's bobsled team, while Simi Adeagbo (Nigerian women's skeleton), Akwasi Frimpong (Ghana men's skeleton), Shannon-Ogbani Abeda (Eritrean men's alpine skiing) and Sabrina Simader (Kenya women's alpine skiing) will also be gunning for gold.
