SuperSport get bye into CAF Confederation Cup second round

Last year's beaten finalists SuperSport United from South Africa have received a bye in the first round of the CAF Confederation Cup, but face a potentially difficult second round clash.

SuperSport await the winner of the first round tie between Petro Atletico (Angola) and Masters Security Services (Malawi), with the Angolans expected to advance.

Whoever makes it past the second stage will face a play-off with the 16 teams that lose in the African Champions League second round in order to reach the group stages.

SuperSport are one of 10 clubs given a bye into the second round, along with USM Alger (Algeria), Zamalek (Egypt), Raja Casablanca (Morocco), Enyimba (Nigeria), DC Motema Pembe (DR Congo), Al Ahly Shandy (Sudan), Al Hilal Obied (Sudan), Club Africain (Tunisia) and Nkana (Zambia).

Zamalek will be confident of making the play-off stage as they face the winner of the tie betweenZimamoto (Zanzibar) and Wolaitta Dicha (Ethiopia).

Three-time Champions League winners Raja await the victors in the tie between Africa Sports (Ivory Coast) and FC Nouadhibou (Mauritania), while Club Africain have a potentially tough outing against either Renaissance Berkane (Morocco) or Mbour Petite Cote (Senegal).

South African debutants Cape Town City make their bow in the first round against Young Buffaloes of Swaziland.

The first round ties will be played on the weekends of February 9-11 and 16-18, with the second round to take place on March 9-11 and 16-18.

The play-off stage will take place on the weekends of April 6-8 and 13-15.

The group phase will begin in early May and conclude in the middle of September, with a two-and-a-half month break for the FIFA World Cup.
