Mamelodi Sundowns look to cement place at PSL league summit

Mamelodi Sundowns will have the chance to further entrench their grip on the Absa Premiership title race on Wednesday, but city rivals SuperSport United will be hoping to take advantage of any slip-ups.

Sundowns host Maritzburg United at Loftus Stadium, while SuperSport face a difficult away day at Free State Stars in two catch-up matches following the duo's exploits in the African club competitions this year.

Sundowns have hit a rich vein of form in recent weeks, taking 13 points from the last 15 and scoring 10 goals in the process as they hit the front approaching the halfway mark of the season.

But Maritzburg epitomise this most bizarre of Absa Premiership seasons as having not scored a goal through one of their own players in 10 matches, they have netted seven in their last two games as they thumped Cape Town City 4-2 and beat Baroka FC 3-0.

It will make for an intriguing tussle, but one that Sundowns will expect to win, especially with playmaker and chief goalscorer Percy Tau in such rampant form.

Sundowns have just a single win in their last seven home league games, but that came last time out as they thumped Baroka 4-0 and coach Pitso Mosimane hopes that will open the floodgates for further success.

"Hopefully we broke the ice at home with Baroka. It's been a little difficult at home because people have reinforced their defence. The good thing is that we are scoring early," he told reporters.

"Maritzburg is a typical example of this. They hang in there and they go out on the break. They are a team on form, they have scored seven goals in two games. It's going to be a difficult one.

"We need to put our experience into place because when you are on top of the log everybody shoots at you. The challenge you have sometimes on top is complacency," Mosimane said.

Mosimane has a number of injury worries, with striker Anthony Laffor and fullback Fares Hachi doubtful, along with midfielder Lucky Mahomi. Forward Cuthbert Malajila remains a long-term injury absentee.

Maritzburg coach Fadlu Davids is relieved his side's luck has finally turned, but says even through their 10-game winless run, he felt their performances deserved more than the results they got.

"We have been playing well throughout [the winless] period. Really good football. Yes we weren't scoring, but we got some draws, one or two games didn't go our way," he was quoted on his club's website.

"If you take the likes of the Pirates game, the Chiefs game, the cup matches against SuperSport, those were all top, top performances. There were a lot of fantastic performances. Now against Baroka we were able to get the goals and kept a clean sheet. I'm very proud of the boys.

"That's what you get with young players. I knew that when I assembled the team with the youngest ever squad the club has had, I knew there would be ups and downs.

"So when there was pressure from the media, I have to shield them. Because they give their all, 100 percent in training, the spirit is absolutely fantastic. If you support them, allow them to play, you'll get results."

Free State Stars coach Luc Eymael has publicly apologised for his side's dismal 3-0 provincial derby defeat to Bloemfontein Celtic at the weekend and suggested his players must show their true potential against SuperSport.

"We really did not come to the party, so I want to apologise to the people of Bethlehem, supporters as well as the management," Eymael said.

"I told my players that winners never go reverse but we played completely [in] reverse. I told my players that it's a derby and in the derby, you don't just play a derby, you play to win it.

"It's the fourth time this season since I took over that we can be in the top three. One time you can understand, two times you can still understand but four times I can't agree with that.

"I hope that my players will bounce back and pay the supporters and management back with a win. Now the ball is in the court of the players to bounce back, I do my utmost best during the week all the time. It's our worst game I have ever seen from my team."

Stars will be without influential midfielder Paulus Masehe through suspension, while SuperSport have a missing link of their own in Dean Furman, who also sits out having reached his yellow cards threshold.

SuperSport coach Eric Tinkler has been forced to call for focus from his players after their 1-1 draw with Cape Town City at the weekend, a game in which they were fortunate to get any points.

Matsatsantsa are seven points behind Sundowns, but have three games in hand, and must still play three times in 2017.

After the game at Stars, they travel away to Baroka on Sunday, before a meeting with Bloemfontein Celtic next Wednesday.

"The approach has to be to win our games. But we have to realise there's a lot of sacrifice we need to put in until the 21st [December]," Tinkler told reporters.

"I can see some players are not entirely focused. We have to get the focus back, where it needs to be. We have to collect maximum from the games remaining [in 2017]."
