NPFL matchday 36 preview: Plateau United aim to bounce back

Leaders Plateau United will aim to bounce back immediately at home to Rivers United, following last weekend's shocking away loss at lowly ABS FC, in arguably the biggest match of NPFL matchday 36.

The leaders maintain a slim three-point lead at the top with nearest challengers MFM FC playing away, and will fancy their chances of seeing off 11th-placed Rivers, who have taken seven points from their last three matches.

MFM FC are away at Abia Warriors, whose good form ended last weekend with an away defeat at Kano Pillars.

The Warriors have endured a mixed campaign, failing to maintain consistency, and their troubles have been compounded by a season-ending injury suffered by Sunday Adetunji three weeks ago.

A win for 14th-place Abia Warriors would move them to the 50-point mark, while MFM will be desperate to win to take the title race to the wire.

Fourth-place Enyimba host a battling Wikki Tourists team - 15th on the table - but will be without the services of as many as six key players for this encounter.

The People's Elephant will be desperate to take all three points to keep pace with third-placed Akwa United following their success on Friday.

FC Ifeanyi Ubah's continental aspirations could be hurt against a Niger Tornadoes side that enjoy relatively solid home form, despite being down in 13th.

The visitors could capitalise on the home team's recent slump which has seen them concede six goals in their last two matches.

Enugu Rangers will be hoping to be the latest team to profit from Remo Stars' recent slump when they travel to Sagamu.

Stars are already down and have lost their last two home games, embarking on a winless run of 11 successive league matches.

They could be generous enough to aid tenth-place Enugu Rangers in their battle against relegation, with the fallen giants still just three points above the drop zone.

A win for Rangers, which will be a first away triumph of the season, could see them move into the top half of the table, helping them preserve their enviable record of never having been relegated from the top flight.

Sixth-place El-Kanemi Warriors are at home to Shooting Stars, who appear condemned for the drop.

The sleeping giants are in 17th place, and their hopes of an away point appear slim considering the home team, who are without the suspended Chibuzor Okonkwo, have only dropped two points at home this season.

Elsewhere,Katsina United - the most impressive of the promoted teams this season - are home to 12th-place Sunshine Stars who are two points clear off their hosts.

A home win could take United within a spot of the top half of the table, while a third away win in nine league fixtures would end Sunshine Stars' relegation fears.

Kano Pillars will be desperate to avenge a disappointing matchday 16 home draw when they meet Nasarawa United in Lafia on Sunday, while Gombe United and ABS FC meet in a potentially explosive relegation battle.
