7.3 Buttler leaps to his right, and clings onto a blinder! Banged in short from Broad, Harris climbs into a reflexive pull, seizing on a rare short ball, but scuffing it past the leg side, the keeper flies to intercept in one hand, good early footwork, and a good early wicket for England! 4/1
64.2 leans back for a thrash, and clatters it straight at Broad! Unbelievable! 94 last week, 95 now. And that was short and wide, and begging to be battered! A foot either side of cover, and he was on 99... instead it's straight into the breadbasket! 176/2
97.5 huge appeal as Marnus leaves alone, and up goes the finger! This looks stone-dead, but the ball is new and the bounce has been true. Australia review. Nip off the seam, back into the knee-roll, impact adjacent to off stump, and that is smashing middle! Robinson gets his man, without much damage after that no-ball. And England have their opening! 241/3
138.6 Huge appeal and given lbw! Smith reviews. Did he get outside the line? He shuffled back and across to a good length ball that nipped back from outside off. No bat involved. Outside the line or not? Ball tracking says ... impact is Umpire's call! it was crashing into the stumps. Decision stays out. Australia keep the review but the stand in skipper falls for 93 385/6

110.3 bowled him! Head makes a meal of a full toss. Completely beaten in flight and drift. It dipped late and he played over the top of it, trying to work square and lost middle and leg. Root was pretty happy. Head was sprawled on one knee in disbelief 291/4
111.3 Bowled him! Cracking delivery. It was angled in, towards middle and off, just nipped away a touch, Green didn't cover the line, playing inside it, it brushed his back leg and hit the top of off. 294/5
140.4 chipped to cover! Easy catch for Hameed. This might have held up. It was 131kph, fuller outside off, not a half-volley, Carey went to drive but checked his shot and just sliced it to cover. 390/7

149.1 a massive yahoo through the line, this has gone high and mighty... Broad back-pedals at long-off, and swallows it well with a tumble. Relief for England! But that was a superb debut knock from the old-stager. Nicely warmed up for his main event... 448/8
150.4 a swish across the line, a thin nick, pouched by Buttler. And as the full beams kick in from the floodlights, Smith has declared! 473/9

6.2 chipped to mid on! Starc takes it and Neser gets mobbed! Full and angled into middle and off, almost a half volley, Hameed tried to whip it with the bottom hand through midwicket and just chipped it straight to mid on. Strange shot. Not many Test openers get caught at mid on like that in the 7th over. 12/2
2.1 Burns is gone! Starc again! Edged straight to second slip and Smith pouches it. Great delivery. Back of a length on off, it just seams away a touch, Burns is playing on the front foot and that closed bat face comes across the line, it catches the outside edge and Smith takes it waist high 7/1

51.5 slashed outside off, and this time he loses composure! Smith at first slip grabs the sharp chance with inverted hands at head height. Too close for the cut, extra pace and bounce. Australia have wrenched out England's set batters straight after lunch and now there's real danger in the air! 157/4
45.4 edged and gone! Well, you have to say it was coming. Green's trajectory was just demanding Root to respond, he lays bat on ball, a lifter on off stump, when realistically he could have left it. It's a fat snick to first slip, and once again, the skipper's century in Australia will have to wait. That's seven in seven Tests in a row. 150/3

79.3 inside-edged onto the stumps! The dream dies for England... he did the right thing, but so too did Green, maintaining that full stump-threatening length, and the big wind-up doesn't come off this time 220/9
56.6 no doubt about this one! Pope skips to the pitch, trying to look proactive, but his attempted clip flies straight to Labuschagne under the lid, it nestles in his breadbasket, and England have lost three for 24 since dinner! 164/5
61.5 edged and taken at first slip! That was predictable. Lured into a drive again as it tails across and away from Buttler, he gets a thick edge and it flies low and fast to Warner at first and he pouches it well. Australia are catching everything. 169/6

74.5 hangs back on the crease, and ping, off come the bails! Outstanding bowling! Woakes completely caught between the devil and the deep blue sea, gets in no position to defend the flighted, dipping delivery, and a thin inside-edge cannons into the off stump! 202/7
76.4 huge spin, nailed on the pad, and that's plumb! Robinson reviews... it's potentially outside the line, but I reckon that's umpire's call at least. Surely smashing the stumps. He was not even halfway forward as the ball ripped in from outside off. Sure enough, umpire's call it is, and middle stump would have been demolished! 204/8

13.6 a calamitous run out! Warner is out! Disastrous mistake. Harris poked it off the inside edge behind square and Warner called yes and then stopped after he saw Harris stall, then Harris ran and Warner turned back but Harris had committed and beat him to the other end. Broad lobbed it to the keeper. 41/1
19.2 stunning take from Buttler! Is it too late to redeem himself? That will certainly help! Wrong-footed by a late, late nick as Harris presses forward at the full length, a full-length sprawl in front of first slip, and he's clung on in the tip of his webbing, hurtling to his left! 48/3
18.6 splat! A hint of nip off the seam from a full length, clips the inside-edge and pings off the top of the middle stump. Emphatic. And the nightwatchman departs 48/2
52.3 honked straight to deep midwicket! Malan has his first Test wicket! And it's a club cricket declaration pie... set the men deep, toss up some filth, lure the big heave, hope the bloke on the rope doesn't stuff it up. Stokes does not stuff it up... England keep brawling. Sort of 173/6
28.6 strangled down the leg side! Another fine catch for Buttler! He's pulling off the blinders and dropping the sitters! This one flicks the glove, loops low to the keeper's left, he sticks out his left hand and clings on well. That earlier miss hasn't been too costly after all! 55/4
45.6 short, pulled high and mighty, and a superb take from Stokes at deep square leg! Sprinting to his left, sprawling on the turf, scooping it up, inches from the ground. A fine innings ends as Robinson gets his reward 144/5

53.6 round the wicket, sliding into the left-hander, who gets in a tangle on the cut, and chops onto his own stumps! England's king of spin is back in da house! And all is right with the world ... ish 180/7
59.3 holes out to deep midwicket! Good catch from Ollie Pope in the deep. Shorter length, Starc tried to mow it into the stands and got it off the toe of the bat and Pope had to judge it in the wind but he held on 216/8
60.6 Malan gets him! Australia declare! Looped up higher and slower, Richardson tried to go again and gets a top edge that goes straight up and Buttler takes a simple catch 230/9

30.6 Smith pouches the edge at second! Richardson was all over him and gets rewarded. Slightly fuller and tighter to off, Burns had to play with the angle coming in, it just straightened off the seam, Burns didn't quite get forward enough, the edge flew low to Smith's right and he held this well. 70/3
1.6 caught behind! Beautiful delivery! Good length, angling to off at 133kph, it seamed away and bounced, brutal ball, he tried to defend and it catches the glove on the way through to Carey. Maybe didn't need to play but the angle drew him in and he had no chance after that. Some delivery 4/1

21.1 full length, and pinged on the pad! Shaping in, Malan reviews as well he might, but this looks curtains. Only thought is height, he was a long way back, but the ball was bouncing. Struck on the knee-roll, not far forward. Impact is fine, and that's flicking off the top of middle! Malan goes, it was a well-made 20. And 100 runs for the match. But well-made 20s aren't going to save the Ashes! 48/2
43.2 got him! Caught behind! Brilliant bowling. 140kph, angled towards off but wasn't close to off, Root thought he had to play, he leaned out to defend, it seamed away a touch and took the edge and Carey takes the chance low to his right! 82/4

56.4 straighter line, thumps the pad, and Australia review! He's right back on the stumps again, but this one may be going down leg... Worth a look either way... no bat involved, so all on Ball Tracker... It's not missing leg! Smashing leg is the verdict, Garry's in the action, and England are all but done here! 105/6
45.3 edged, straight to Smith at slip! Oh my, over the wicket for the first time today, Pope pokes loosely, covering his stumps but not the shape as it gets big across his body. A fat nick to second slip, a long walk. This isn't going to last long, is it? 86/5
109.6 hit wicket! Buttler's so deep in his crease, he's trodden on his own stumps! So deep in his crease, trying to manipulate the angle to pinch a single through the off side... but he's only gone and wrecked the hoose! What a ghastly end to a heroic stay! On the back foot, high elbow, it was his heel that did it. What scenes... 182/9
87.6 bowled him! Clean through the gate! That's the reward of aiming full, there's nip off the new-ball seam, climbs off the deck too, past the inside-edge, beaten for pace as the middle stump is pinged back! A valiant hand, but the new ball has done the needful. What little hope there was, is rather slenderer now! 166/7
102.2 Got him! Caught at slip! Brilliant from Smith! Change of angle from Lyon gets it done. Good length pitching on middle from around the wicket, he's back to defend but this slides on straighter with the angle, catches the edge and Smith takes a very sharp catch low to his right. Two to go for Australia 178/8

113.1 another short ball, another flinch, another looping chance into the cordon. Scooped up by Green in the gully and Australia are 2-0 up in the Ashes! One hand comes off the bat as Anderson tries to ride the bounce, but there's too much heat on that one. England's valiant rearguard ends in the 114th over. It was good while it lasted, but it just wasn't enough. It's a maiden five-for for Richardson too, reward for some hostile lines all Test long 192/10
