Kirk Cousins gave newborn son a game ball after win over 49ers

ASHBURN, Virginia -- After Washington Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins scored what proved to be the winning touchdown Sunday, he made sure to keep the ball. Then he delivered it to someone who had no clue what to do with it: his newborn son.

Cooper, born last month, had attended his first game with his mother, Julie. Her husband, and Cooper’s father, put the ball in the nursery later that night, after the 26-24 victory over San Francisco.

“Now my wife wants it to get painted up to say, ‘Cooper’s game ball,’” Cousins said. “Hopefully there will be many more games like that.”

Cousins called it a thrill to have his son attend the game, even if he was simply being swaddled in his mother’s arms.

“It was a thrill and it all goes back to when you win it makes for a great memory,” Cousins said. “We had a lot of fun in the players’ parking lot afterwards. I was able to hold him and kind of take in the moment.”

Now he’d like to repeat that scene a few more times. At 29, Cousins is still in the prime of his career. Of course, where he spends the rest of that career remains an ongoing topic, and will be one this offseason, too. He’ll either return to Washington, likely on a third franchise tag, or head elsewhere.

Regardless, he hopes his son can someday understand what his father does.

“I told my wife that I would like to play long enough to where he can come to a game and remember it and have that memory,” Cousins said. “Hopefully I can play long enough where he can see me play and remember it.”

Either way, Sunday was a day Cousins won’t forget.
