Weekend Rewind: Alabama

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Alabama’s 49-0 drubbing of Auburn in the Iron Bowl on Saturday was the last domino to fall before Gene Chizik was fired as head coach of the Tigers. Now the Crimson Tide are looking to poach some of AU’s top recruits.

Over the weekend, Alabama hosted a number of Auburn commitments including defensive tackle Dee Liner, the state’s top-ranked player, ESPN 300 wide receiver Earnest Robinson and four-star athlete Jason Smith.

“It was fun,” Smith said of his visit. “I came in for the game with my parents. The atmosphere was crazy. Whenever you come to a big rivalry game like that, it’s going to be packed out, and the excitement of that game is crazy. It was great. I liked it.”

All three prospects remain committed to Auburn for now, but their future might depend on who the Tigers hire as their next head coach.

As for the Crimson Tide, they enjoyed a big weekend off the field as well as on the field. Although there were no commitments, Alabama welcomed top 2013 recruits such as ESPN 150 safety Vonn Bell and Florida State commitment Marquez White on campus for the Iron Bowl.

The 2014 class was also well represented with the majority of the state’s top players as well as some talented out-of-state prospects including offensive linemen Andy Bauer (St. Louis, Mo./De Smet) and Ross Pierschbacher (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Cedar Falls).

“It was [my] best visit,” Bauer said. “I love Alabama. They’re awesome, and I have a really good relationship with the coaching staff.”
