SBP 'elated' as Guiao accepts Asian Games coaching job

NLEX coach Yeng Guiao will lead the Philippine men's basketball team in the upcoming 2018 Asian Games in Indonesia.

The news was confirmed to ESPN5 by Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) president Al Panlilio.

"Coach Yeng has also spoken to Rain or Shine owner Raymund Yu and Coach Caloy Garcia," Panlilio said in a message.

"I am elated that Coach Yeng has accepted (the head coaching job) especially that Raymond Yu requested him to do so. Coach Yeng is one of our best coaches and has a lot of international experience," he added.

Guiao will coach a team comprised of players mostly coming from Rain or Shine, a squad he previously handled in the PBA.

According to Philippine Olympic Committee president Ricky Vargas, apart from core players from the Elasto Painters, the country's 18-man lineup for the Asian Games also includes NBA player and Filipino-American Jordan Clarkson.

It will be Guiao's second time to coach the national team. He last held the responsibility in 2009 when the Philippines competed in the FIBA Asia Championship.
