Dogs, Bontempelli in talks on new AFL deal

Western Bulldogs star Marcus Bontempelli has revealed negotiations on a new AFL contract with the club are underway.

The 22-year-old's current deal keeps him at Whitten Oval until the end of the 2019 season.

But Bontempelli's management has already opened talks with the Dogs on an extension.

"The conversation has already started ... we're working through it each day really," Bontempelli told Fox Footy's On The Couch.

"The benefit I have is that it's still a year and a half away and I can continue to just play and let the rest play out in the background."

The Dogs and the club's fans alike will be keen to get the premiership player's signature on a long-term deal.

In his 93-game AFL career he has shown flashes of freakish ability that can turn a contest in his side's favour.

While Bontempelli has made a name for himself as a midfielder, coach Luke Beveridge has played him closer to goal for longer this season.

It's a move that could even prove more permanent.

"It could potentially happen, it definitely could," he said.

"It's always going to depend on how we look up the field and if it means I can spend more time up forward, it probably means we've got enough players who can rotate through the midfield.

"I've developed a respect and the ability to play (forward) for longer periods of time. I think it's harder when you spend a bit more time in the midfield because of how the physical requirements of playing forward, the speed and changing directions, are different from playing midfield.

"I feel like I've got quite a bit of growth in terms of understanding the game as a forward, reading the play, adjusting once the ball moves."
