Carlton have posted their first win of the season, upsetting their old AFL enemies Essendon by 15 points in atrocious conditions at the MCG.

The Blues kicked two goals to two behinds in the last quarter and won 7.15 (57) to 6.6 (42), adding another chapter to the fierce rivalry between these clubs.

Carlton captain Marc Murphy was best afield, leading his team superbly with two crucial goals, 32 disposals, 10 tackles and six clearances.

Defenders Sam Rowe, Simon White, Caleb Marchbank and Lachie Plowman also shone for the Blues.

After Carlton's Ed Curnow snapped a goal early in the last quarter, Essendon had several chances to respond.

But they could only manage two behinds and Sam Kerridge kicked a goal from a free with less than a minute left to cap a great win.

As the rain settled in during the first half, the ball was like a cake of soap.

The tactics became simple - gain territory, continuous tackling pressure and make the most of limited opportunities.

Essendon, aiming for a 3-0 start to the season for the first time since 2013, led by eight points at quarter-time as the Blues opened with a wasteful 1.5

Murphy snapped a smart goal from a pack at 15 minutes in the second term to put Carlton ahead for the first time.

Carlton's No.1 draft pick from 2015 Jacob Weitering left the field bleeding heavily from a head cut during the second term after he clashed heads with Michael Hurley.

Weitering returned to the game in the third term with his head bandaged.

The Blues led by a point at the main break and looked the better side.

Carlton and Essendon kicked two goals apiece in the third quarter, with the highlight a miracle snap by Murphy from the boundary line, deep in a pocket.

While the Blues only led by four points at the last change, it may as well have been four goals.

The Blues had 22 scoring shots to 12, led the tackle count 111-98 and had 60 inside 50s to 37.

Captain Dyson Heppell, Hurley and small forward Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti were best for the Bombers.
