Match Commentary

81'Tom Hamilton in Sydney:

"The clean sweep complete. England are history makers in Australia after winning the series 3-0 after they won the third Test against the best Wallabies performance we have seen over the last three weekends. Matt Toomua was outstanding for the Wallabies as was the brilliant Israel Folau but England managed to weather the storms and returned fire with the pinpoint Owen Farrell keeping the scoreboard ticking over alongside wonderful performances from Ben Youngs and Billy Vunipola. Eddie Jones the miracle-worker. They are now nine from nine under the Australian coach who has turned this team into a side who will now be feared by the rugby world."
81'ENGLAND WIN THE TEST SERIES 3-0 -- THE FIRST TIME EVER ON AUSTRALIAN SOIL
81'Foley to kick some more points. We're at 84 ... we'll stay at 84. That's it!
81'What a crazy game. England give up 40 points - and win! And kind of comfortably. Utterly bizarre.
81'Australia desperate to score and get some pride back. They're building through phases and territory, into the 22, Foley with a great bursting run. Phipps with the pass out left, to Naiyaravoro, and over. Try for Australia. If nothing else, hats off to them for never stopping.
81'The scrum keeps falling down. Tick, tock, there are celebrations to be had here, lads...
81'+340-44 End of second half
81'+240-44 Try - Taqele Naiyaravoro , Australia
80'Sensational from England. Somewhat understandably, they knock on from the kick off. They just want to celebrate. The crowd are streaming for the exits.
80'Swing low... through it goes! That's it. England have done it. There will be time for one more play, but as a contest... THIS. IS. OVER!
80'Substitute on - Matt Mullan , England
80'Player substituted - Mako Vunipola , England
80'35-44 Penalty goal - Owen Farrell , England
78'Phipps is the man who loses his head and goes straight over the ruck, taking out the "9". Illegal clearing, penalty England, Farrell to put this game to bed from 40 metres, dead centre.
78'Care taking charge of things at every ruck. England through into the 11th, 12th phase. Australia having to hold their disipline. Have they stolen it? No. They've killed it! And referee Owens gives the penalty to England! That's it, surely? England are going to complete a whitewash in Australia!
77'Big drive from England from the lineout, Australia under pressure not to collapse it or that would essentially be that. England setting up and setting up and setting up. They can just about smell the whitewash...
77'England taking their sweet time to set the lineout up. The Aussie fans boo. England don't care.
76'George burrowing away manages to steal the ball for England, a kick forward by Nowell is returned by Haylett-Petty but England will have the lineout.
76'Vunipola has had to go off with that leg injury. England's resources stretched to breaking point. Australia probing in England territory.
75'England's defence holding it's shape well, so it's thumped back and forth from deep by both sides, Brown eventually finding touch near halfway. Five minutes to go.
75'Substitute on - Elliot Daly , England
75'Player substituted - Billy Vunipola , England
73'Itoje takes a good throw from George at the lineout. Care with the deep kick to Australia's 10 metre line. Folau gathers. Australia regather. Here comes the counter-attack...
73'Australia turn England over, the kick over the top bounces into touch in the 22. Lineout to England but pressure is on.
72'Foley kicks over, the deficit is back to six. Converted try to win, but 76 points in 72 minutes is a stunning scoring rate.
72'35-41 Penalty goal - Bernard Foley , Australia
71'Fittingly, Australia hit straight back! The chase from the kick-off straight into England's 22, the ball squirts from Brown and in the fallout it's desperate measures from the England pack and a penalty for not releasing.
70'This is the most testing kick Farrell has faced this half. He's five metres in from the touchline, out on the left. This goes over and this is a record points haul against Australia for England. Jeers and whistles from the crowd. Unreal strike, absolutely unreal. That is as dead centre as you could possibly put it. Farrell has 21 points on the day, England have 41 points and a new record in this famous rivalry.
70'32-41 Penalty goal - Owen Farrell , England
69'Penalty pending for England, so Ford goes for a wildly optimistic drop goal. Nowhere near, but they have the penalty anyway, Scott Sio getting a talking to for not joining the maul correctly. Meanwhile Billy Vunipola has a sore leg but he can't come off as England have used all their forward subs.
68'Foley takes a great catch under a high up and under on halfway. Then it all gets a bit loose again from the Aussies and it's an England lineout in Australia's half.
68'Substitute on - Christian Leali'ifano , Australia
68'Player substituted - Matt To'omua , Australia
68'Player substituted - Rob Horne , Australia
68'Substitute on - Taqele Naiyaravoro , Australia
68'Player substituted - Dan Cole , England
68'Substitute on - Paul Hill , England
68'32-38 Conversion - Owen Farrell , England
67'32-36 Try - Jamie George , England
66'
66'Total shambles in the Wallabies defence set that up. Care eventually sends a low pass along the ground to George, it hits off his ankle, spins over the line and he's first to get to it. Luck? Judgement? England won't care. They lead again. Farrell adds the extras. Goodness me what a game.
66'The ball squirts out from the bottom of a ruck and suddenly England are on the charge through Mike Brown. He bursts towards the left corner. Then it's worked super wide by England and Nowell is in space. He's to the five metre line and brought down, then the ball comes out and Jamie George is over! It's a try for England, and it's more unbelievable footwork from George!
65'An off the ball incident sees Farrell dumped heavily into the turf, but everyone moves on quickly and Ford finds touch inside the Australian 22. Territory absolutely critical at this juncture, one mistake could win this game for either side.
64'England almost get a chance midway inside the Australia half, the Wallabies switching off a bit and having additional men on the left, only for Foley and Phipps to swoop on Watson and drag him into touch. Absolutely crucial tackling, met with some sledging after the play from Dylan Hartley. That's his last contribution, Jamie George on in his place.
64'Substitute on - Jamie George , England
64'Player substituted - Dylan Hartley , England
63'More indiscipline at the breakdown by Australia and Michael Cheika shakes his head in despair. England were on the rack after a deep kick-off into their corner, but they're let off the hook by that penalty.
63'Substitute on - Tatafu Polota-Nau , Australia
63'Player substituted - Stephen Moore , Australia
62'There's a mark in the middle of the crossbar - a black stretch of paint that marks the centre point. If Owen Farrell was given extra points for kicking the ball over that, England would be winning. They trail by one.
62'Player substituted - George Kruis , England
62'Substitute on - Joe Launchbury , England
62'32-31 Penalty goal - Owen Farrell , England
61'Australia penalised at the breakdown and England will keep the scoreboard ticking you would think. Farrell eyeing up the posts...
60'
60'Four-point game again. Superb fightback from the Wallabies after a shocking start to the second half for them.
59'Substitute on - Greg Holmes , Australia
59'Player substituted - Sekope Kepu , Australia
59'Player substituted - James Slipper , Australia
59'Substitute on - Scott Sio , Australia
59'32-28 Conversion - Bernard Foley , Australia
58'Toomua broke a tackle or two midway inside the England half, and in the blink of an eye it's he and Folau against one defender. Easy pass, easy try, wonderfully clinical stuff and Australia now have the lead. What a game!
58'Toomua, laid off to Folau - and that's a try for Australia! That was ridiculously simple for the Wallabies!
58'30-28 Try - Israel Folau , Australia
56'Short kick-off from Australia, straight down the middle, and Maro Itoje makes a contender for catch of the series in the middle of the park. Stunning from the England man.
56'Up and true again. Solid stuff from Farrell.
56'25-28 Penalty goal - Owen Farrell , England
55'Farrell will kick for goal having let a little sweary word slip out. "Mind your language," says referee Owens, obviously aware that his ref mic will have picked that up.
55'Jack Clifford comes on. England's scrum, meanwhile, wins a penalty as Australia are penalised for wheeling the scrum. "Not driving straight," says referee Owens. Penny for Bob Dwyer's thoughts?
54'Australia's scrum disintegrates. Turnover ball and it will be England's put in. That is a huge disappointment for the Wallabies, after a cracking three or four minutes for them.
54'Player substituted - Ben Youngs , England
54'Substitute on - Danny Care , England
54'Player substituted - Chris Robshaw , England
54'Substitute on - Jack Clifford , England
53'Itoje unchallenged at an England lineout midway inside the Australia half. Australia regroup beautifully and deliberately and England can't keep the maul upright. Scrum Australia.
52'Foley with the conversion. 25-25. Half an hour to go. Can we not just keep playing till, say, first to 100? This is cracking stuff.
52'Substitute on - Wycliff Palu , Australia
52'Player substituted - Will Skelton , Australia
52'25-25 Conversion - Bernard Foley , Australia
51'
51'Well, did that reach the line? Two replays seem to suggest no, but the third angle proves it did. Try Australia!
51'Here come Australia. McMahon driving to within five metres of the try line. Kepu flips it to Slipper, then Hooper to the line - TRY! Try? Let's see. TMO time. Either way, great response from Australia.
51'23-25 Try - Michael Hooper , Australia
50'Australia desperately need to turn the tide - and here they come! From a lineout at halfway they move fast and true through the gain line not once, not twice, but three times and Coleman is almost through. If it wasn't for Youngs and Nowell, he would have been. Scrum inside the England 22, which is actually a result for England given the circumstances.
48'There are very sweetly struck penalties, and then there's another level beyond that. Farrell just hit that other level beyond it. The ball positively sings as it soars through the uprights, straight down the middle. Worth noting that was from almost exactly the same position as the one Foley dragged left in the first half. Unbelievable kicking from Farrell.
48'18-25 Penalty goal - Owen Farrell , England
46'Courtney Lawes now rips an Australian lineout from their hands in mid-air. Splendid stuff from the early sub. And Skelton pays for collapsin the maul. Penalty England. Eddie Jones has fired a rocket up his players at the break, and goodness me is that evident right now!
45'Farrell can't bring the conversion round enough, so it's a four-point lead. England will take that, but they will also know that this is the opportunity they've been waiting for. Australia reeling.
44'Scrum five to England. What a chance this is to grab the second-half momentum. Billy Vunipola, TRY! Easy, easy, easy. The easiest and most simplistic of set pieces and Australia appear to still be in the dressing room!
44'18-22 Try - Billy Vunipola , England
43'As if distracted, though, Australia make a total hash of the lineout and it goes straight to Robshaw at the back of the line! It's surely going to be a try?! No, held up over the line. Goodness me, that was almost terrible self-harm on their own line for the Wallabies. Shockingly poor lineout all round.
43'Referee Owens explains why hitting the camera is "play on", assessing that there's no advantage to either team.
42'Joseph disrupts things but can't kick on and it's an advantage to Australia for a knock on. Advantage over, and eventually it ends up in the hands of Jack Nowell. Ford boots a huge kick up in the air - and it catches the wire that holds the flying fox camera in the air! And that means that Ben Youngs catches it on the run and England get the ball back! Very strange set of circumstances. Australia have a lineout now deep in their own 22.
41'First high ball from defence from England is caught by a salmon-like Folau. Wonderful take under pressure from Nowell. Australia looking to get something moving early here.
41'
41'
41'Player substituted - Rob Simmons , Australia
41'Substitute on - Adam Coleman , Australia
41'+218-17 End of first half
41'+218-17 Penalty goal - Bernard Foley , Australia
40'Tom Hamilton delivers his half-time verdict:

"Eddie Jones has done it again. Teimana Harrison lasted just 31 minutes before being given the unceremonious hook with Courtney Lawes replacing him. England, up to that point, were losing the gainline battle. Sekope Kepu and Will Skelton were throwing their physicality around to great success and off that Bernard Foley, Matt Toomua and Israel Folau were enjoying carving through the England defence. But England, who matched Australia?s two tries with a pair of their own, have been more clinical in attack with Mike Brown capping a wonderful move to score after Anthony Watson kicked through.

"But make no mistake about it. This is the most deadly Australia have looked in the series and England are missing James Haskell?s presence. This game is nicely poised for what should be a brilliant second half."
40'In fact it's a penalty to Australia, so Foley to kick for goal and the lead at the break. Straight over, evenly poised and absolutely fantastic once again. Cracking Test rugby all round.
40'Slipper tries to drag Cole over halfway and then the hooter sounds. This will be the last play before the brerak. Moore, to Folau, Australia drifting left. Slipper infield a little. Then Skelton, then Phipps to McMahon, now Haylett-Petty is clear down the right. He's brought down but the crowd can sense a chance here. An advantage for a knock on, up and under to the corner, Folau v Nowell... and Folau has it! No, he doesn't! A one-handed break-up by Nowell which is more NFL cornerback than rugby international winger! That's an astonishing grab, absolutely astonishing.
40'The treatment for Simmons ends, and Australia can get the scrum going. One last attack? Yes indeed. No up-the-jumper stuff here!
40'
40'
40'18-17 Start of second half
39'Itoje now out on the wing and threatening to take bodies with him. Australia need three to bring him down. England have the Wallabies stretched but a forward pass to Robshaw means the move fizzles out.
37'Silly knock on from Phipps at the base of the ruck, but also indicative of a change of attitude from England at the breakdown. No prizes for guessing that Itoje is causing havoc again. Michael Cheika shakes his head. Frustrated with his own man, for sure, but perhaps subliminally frustrated by the sheer athletic prowess at England's disposal in the figure of Maro Itoje.
36'Billy Vunipola scrambles back in defence, makes a good catch, then drops the ball in the tackle. Knock on, scrum Australia.
34'With Lawes on, Itoje moves to No.6, Robshaw to 7. Or 6.5, perhaps...
34'And Foley pulls his kick - the distance was on the edge of his range, and his extra effort to get it there means he sacrifices his accuracy. Cole off the hook there.
33'Ref Owens pretty disappointed in Dan Cole for taking the man out and conceding a penalty. That was pretty naughty from England's first try scorer. Maybe some frustration there, but it's a penalty to Australia and a pretty needless one at that.
32'And Farrell boots a glorious conversion. England, despite being on the receiving end the majority of the time so far, are ahead. Clinical stuff.
32'Player substituted - Teimana Harrison , England
32'Substitute on - Courtney Lawes , England
31'15-17 Conversion - Owen Farrell , England
30'Sneaked out in all of that is Courtney Lawes - Teimana Harrison is off after 30 minutes. England's struggles at the breakdown are being addressed aggressively by Eddie Jones.
30'Watson was set free on the left and his kick forward is absolutely perfect. It bounces up into Brown's hands and despite Hooper and Kuridrani trying desperately to haul him back, the full-back slithers over the line. That's a wonderful try.
30'And rebuild they do!! TRY ENGLAND!! TRY MIKE BROWN!! But full, full credit to Anthony Watson.
30'15-15 Try - Mike Brown , England
29'England looked as though they might get some pressure out of that but Skelton turned the ball over well at the breakdown and Australia thump it clear. England back near halfway, having to rebuild.
28'"He was never catching that," says Dylan Hartley in protest. Hartley was the man closest to the incident and was immediately incensed by the challenge on his England teammate.
28'And from the restart, there are oohs and aahs from the crowd as Skelton and Watson collide in spectacular - if slightly worrying - fashion. There's a bit of a scuffle afterwards, Australia are penalised for a dangerous tackle but in truth that's just what happens in rugby. Two big men going for the ball. TMO getting involved to see if there's anything more required for it. Referee Owens doesn't think so, so England will have "just" a penalty for that collision. And a bit of a talking to for Skelton, and the two skippers as well.
28'Pinged over by Foley. The lead is back to five points.
27'England's defence collapses almost immediately, though, penalised for not releasing the ball and Australia have an easy three points in front of the posts.
27'15-10 Penalty goal - Bernard Foley , Australia
26'What a sweet strike that is from Farrell. Two points in it and we have a real contest here once again. Super rugby.
26'12-10 Penalty goal - Owen Farrell , England
25'The scrum collapses as Australia loose their footing and pay the penalty. Surely this will be a kick at goal. And it will be.
24'Robshaw takes the play to Australia, a super run putting England on the front foot in the 22. A knock on by Australia and it's advantage England. No advantage, so it's a scrum. England doing exactly what they need to, to get a foot back in the game.
23'
22'Difficult conversion for Foley out on the right touchline. Dragged it. The lead is five points, but the hosts are in the ascendancy here. Big 10 minutes for England.
21'Watson left isolated on the left of England's defence and that was similar to some of the play Australia defeated England with in the World Cup last year. It's fast, flowing, crisp rugby that proves very difficult to keep in check.
21'12-7 Try - Dane Haylett-Petty , Australia
20'Australia looking to build off the lineout. Hooper takes a good line to burst the defence and Australia can see England's line. Haylett-Petty brought down seven metres out, in front of the posts. Fardy takes on the charge. Phipps, McMahon, Folau - TRY! Haylett-Petty getting outside and Australia have their second try of the match!
19'Australia making good ground in the scrum, against the head. Big roar from the crowd, they want more of that! England slowing things down, putting their foot on the ball and looking for calm. Only for Youngs to fumble when picking up to clear and then having to hack it into touch. The Wallabies are winning the pressure battle right now.
17'Kuridrani looking for a way through on the left. Now Phipps. We're into double figures in phases. Hooper, one pass and they're in! But no! Joseph with the key interception, and it will be brought back for a knock on against the Wallabies. Close call for England and super play across the backs from Australia.
16'Australia have a scrum on halfway and attack down the right flank. It's worked back inside and Toomua flips it to Foley as they swap positions to great effect. Folau now through the middle. Now McMahon breaking through tackles and Australia are midway inside the England half.
15'This, so far, is more first Test than second Test. Both teams looking to move the ball quickly and play some rugby.
14'
14'
14'Foley with the conversion, and we're all square.
14'7-7 Conversion - Bernard Foley , Australia
13'That will be a TRY! Itoje knocks it out of Haylett-Petty's hand, then off the Wallabies' man's thigh.
13'And just like that, Australia score! There's going to be a TMO review all the same. Ref Owens was unsighted so wants a second look at the way in which the ball went forward in the loose. Was it an Aussie hand? Jack Nowell misses a tackle in the aftermath, but the incident that matters is Maro Itoje's hit on Haylett-Petty, who drops the ball, it hits his thigh and tumbles forward. Knock on or not?
13'5-7 Try - Bernard Foley , Australia
12'Easy conversion for Farrell. Pressure on Australia already, and credit to England for keeping the momentum of the series on the whole on top of the Wallabies. Fast, hard, physical yet skillful rugby. Very impressive indeed.
12'0-7 Conversion - Owen Farrell , England
11'Mako Vunipola bursting for the line! He's just short, two metres and no more. Then it's back to Cole - and he's over! TRY FOR ENGLAND! Splendid try and a triumph for the forwards. Australia reeling once again.
11'0-5 Try - Dan Cole , England
10'Joseph tries to get out on the left and had Farrell on his shoulder but chose to ignore him when a pass might just have set the No.12 free. Still England build in the Australia 22.
9'Beautiful dummy from Ford opens up a cracking chance for England, and Nowell then carries on as well before Australia force the turnover. Vital defence once again from the Wallabies, who haven't been cut open like this in the early stages of the previous two Tests. England playing with some variety and pace this week.
9'Beautiful dummy from Ford opens up a cracking chance for England, and Nowell then carries on as well before Australia force the turnover. Vital defence once again from the Wallabies, who haven't been cut open like this in the early stages of the previous two Tests. England playing with some variety and pace this week.
8'And they do just that, Will Skelton given a reprimand for not rolling away. "You've got to move quicker on the wrong side," says Owens. Referee clearly wants the pace of this game to be maintained. So far, it's fast!
8'Brutal effort from Foley to find touch with the penalty though, he's missed by a way there. Brown scoops it up and England look to ease the pressure in their own territory.
7'Penalty Australia for England collapsing, and that whistle is music to the ears of Wallabies fans. They absolutely loved that!
6'The first scrum of the night, and it least this week we'll not be building sandcastles after every one of them. Still, a warning to Australia for not controlling the scrum from referee Nigel Owens, who gets things reset and it's England's put in.
5'
5'Good burst from Billy Vunipola in Australia territory off the back of a lineout, but another big hit jars the ball loose and it's a knock on. Scrum Australia.
4'Just as it looks as though Farrell can get it out to extra men on the left, Foley comes in and makes a stunning tackle that wraps up the England man and dumps him bone-jarringly to the turf. Splendid defence.
3'A stray pass from Phipps as he is shackled by Robshaw knocks Australia back to half way. Mike Brown catches a deep kick in his own 22 and looks to burst forward. Jack Nowell then leads England into opposition territory with a fine run down the right. England threatening.
2'Big boot by Foley down to the 22. And the lineout is won supremely by Fardy. A crispness to both sides' play already.
1'England win the ball from the kick off and are building and recycling well until some super counter-rucking from the Wallabies, which not only turns the ball over but wins them a penalty for playing the ball on the floor.
1'And we are underway!
1'George Ford to kick us off...
1'Huge roar after the completion of Advance Australia Fair - the home crowd are desperate for their team to salvage some pride here. A whitewash is unthinkable, especially against an Eddie Jones-led England.
1'The now customary "Welcome to Country" message is delivered by Marcia Ella-Duncan - the sister of England assistant coach Glen Ella. "We welcome the England team, with whom I share a surprising and personal connection," she says.
