Match Commentary

81'+128-39 End of second half
81'+128-39 Conversion - Owen Farrell , England
80'Some final thoughts from rugby editor Tom Hamilton, at the Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane:
"And breathe. England have secured their first ever win in Brisbane and their fourth on Australian soil with James Haskell putting in a performance for the ages.
"The England openside played like a man possessed as he hunted anything and everything in green and gold and gave his side a platform from which they could build.
"Australia threw everything at England but in the end their ill-discipline let them down. England?s tactical approach was spot on with Maro Itoje also superb while George Ford?s entry after just 29 minutes helped develop their attacking structure.
"Eddie Jones is now seven wins from seven games as England coach and is making history wherever he goes."
80'England captain Dylan Hartley: "We need to keep our feet on the ground. We put all our focus and energy into this first game but it's the first of a three-match series. "We were 10-0 down and struggled to get a foothold. Once we finally got down their end, it was good to get points on the board. "The scrum was a bit messy - it's always built up into a big thing but I don't think there were many completed scrums. "It's great for the series. It's exciting."
80'Stephen Moore is interviewed in the stadium post-match: "England deserved the win. There were bits and pieces that didn't go well for us. That's something we have to look at - it's part of Test footy. "We need to straighten it out for next week. They played well at the breakdown. We need to get back on it next week and get ready for Melbourne."
80'Absolutely unbelievable finish. George Ford with a beautiful kick through for Nowell to score in the corner, and the touch down itself was fabulous. Full credit to Ford, who has put in a super shift since coming on for Burrell in a tactical switch on the half-hour mark. Farrell will kick from out wide to add two more points to the winning margin. Oh, what a kick. He pumps his fist as the ball flies over. What a game!
80'Kuridrani, Haylett-Petty, and then... knock on! Advantage England, and Danny Care decides to burst forward! It's England's game to win now! Kick to the left corner and Nowell is clear! Nowell is clear if he can pick up and touch down! He does! Try for England!! England win in Brisbane!!
80'28-37 Try - Jack Nowell , England
79'Deep kick off from Ford. Australia throw the ball around in search of a line break. They're deep in their own 22 and the next turnover will all but end the game. The ball is in the hands of Folau who gets all the way to the 10m line in Australian territory. One minute left on the clock...
78'It does. The lead is cut to four. A try - conversion or not - would win it for Australia. Up the jumper time for England. Two minutes to play.
78'Big call. Foley points to the posts! Well, he's not been clockwork tonight, but this is right in front of the posts from the 10 metre line. It has to go over...
78'Player substituted - Nick Phipps , Australia
78'Substitute on - Nick Frisby , Australia
78'28-32 Penalty goal - Bernard Foley , Australia
77'Another scrum to Australia, again in England territory - and the collapse leads to a penalty to the Wallabies. Pressure building, can England's nerve hold out?
74'Australia going through the phases until it reaches Folau, who has been the accelerator pedal throughout tonight's game for the Wallabies. Another line break puts more pressure on and Haskell and Robshaw combine to snaffle the Aussies into touch. Michael Cheika can be seen beating his desk in frustration. He'll have a lot to analyse on the back of this, win or lose.
73'Penalty to Australia from the restart for not rolling away. Foley will clear deep into English territory. Well, well, well...
72'Player substituted - Billy Vunipola , England
72'Substitute on - Joe Launchbury , England
72'Substitute on - Luke Cowan-Dickie , England
72'Player substituted - Dylan Hartley , England
72'25-32 Conversion - Bernard Foley , Australia
71'Try for Australia! Kuridrani barrels over from quick ball five metres out and maybe, just maybe, that can be the lifeline Australia need. Foley should add the extras and that will make it seven points of a difference with nine minutes to go...
71'23-32 Try - Tevita Kuridrani , Australia
70'Australia come banging straight back at England and it's Folau - as has been the case all night. He goes down the right flank and England are on the rack on their own line. Across to the left it goes, Kuridrani is held up and England have numbers in place once again. It all becomes a bit ponderous from the Wallabies and it will be a penalty for offside against England. Referee Poite then apologises that he can't play on as David Pocock needs to go off for a HIA. That's probably the end of his game, with 10 minutes remaining.
70'Substitute on - Jack Nowell , England
70'Player substituted - Anthony Watson , England
70'Substitute on - Danny Care , England
70'Player substituted - Ben Youngs , England
70'Player substituted - David Pocock , Australia
70'Substitute on - Scott Fardy , Australia
68'Substitute on - Sean McMahon , Australia
68'Player substituted - Scott Fardy , Australia
67'It's there. Is that it?
67'18-32 Penalty goal - Owen Farrell , England
66'Penalty for England! Australia lose the ball at the back of the lineout and are caught on the wrong side. Itoje goes wild - that must be infuriating to be on the receiving end of after every decision! Farrell from near midway, slap bang in front of the posts...
66'Substitute on - Paul Hill , England
66'Player substituted - Dan Cole , England
66'Player substituted - Mako Vunipola , England
66'Substitute on - Matt Mullan , England
66'Substitute on - James Slipper , Australia
66'Player substituted - Scott Sio , Australia
65'Scott Sio's expulsion is over, but he will not return to the field as James Slipper replaces him to bring Australia back to their full XV.
64'And just as Australia are looking dangerous within the England 22, James Haskell makes a superb steal of a loose ball and alleviates the pressure once again. Haskell, like Itoje, has been superb.
63'England offside at the breakdown from the lineout and Foley will go to touch. The clock now becoming an enemy for Australia.
61'Another edition of long-bangers breaks out before Ford boots into touch around halfway. That's sensible from England, as the looser rugby has suited Australia far more.
60'Player substituted - George Kruis , England
60'Substitute on - Courtney Lawes , England
59'Foley from the right touchline... nope, never really stood a chance and seemed like a bit of a hit and hope. The deficit is 11 points and one man for another five minutes.
59'Australia trying to get some momentum going and they score! Great handling once again - just as there was in the opening stages of this match - and the running rugby wins out. Foley, to Folau, and Hooper is all on his own to touch down in the corner. Game on?
59'18-29 Try - Michael Hooper , Australia
57'Farrell boots over from 40 metres and England are nearly out of sight.
57'Player substituted - Greg Holmes , Australia
57'Substitute on - Sekope Kepu , Australia
57'Substitute on - Tatafu Polota-Nau , Australia
57'Player substituted - Stephen Moore , Australia
57'13-29 Penalty goal - Owen Farrell , England
55'Scott Sio is yellow carded for repeated scrum infringements, then England immediately earn another penalty at the scrum. This is bodyline, just as prescribed by Eddie Jones. The intensity of every scrum and every penalty award is palpable.
54'Yellow card - Scott Sio , Australia
52'Now it's Australia's turn to whoop and holler as Itoje is turned over at the lineout and Australia will get the put-in at the scrum. They're 10 metres inside England territory.
51'Another enormous win for the England pack as Australia get wheeled around and England get the penalty to clear their lines emphatically. Maro Itoje leads the celebrations, just as he has led much of the pack's efforts so far today. It's been a masterclass from the young man.
50'The lineout squirms away from Australia and England will have the put-in at the ensuing scrum. A chance to clear their lines and it does seem Australia hit the panic button a bit there. They still have half an hour to get this deficit back.
49'Australia get an opportunity to get a foothold back in this game as Hooper breaks forward and England are punished for leaving their feet. Rather than take the three, Foley kicks to touch and it will be a lineout 10 metres from the England line. It's got that serious that quickly for the Aussies.
48'Player substituted - Rory Arnold , Australia
48'Substitute on - Dean Mumm , Australia
48'13-26 Conversion - Owen Farrell , England
47'Farrell adds the extras. England are racing away with this.
46'Break by Haskell from the lineout! Brilliant running from the back-row. Ford with a brilliant miss pass across the 5m line and Yarde finishes with ease. What a try! Have England broken this game completely?
46'13-24 Try - Marland Yarde , England
44'Farell's kick.... off the post! It started out to the right and didn't quite come back enough. Australia clean up and England will have a lineout in midfield.
43'England ease that pressure and then the tables are turned fully when Australia fail to release in their own half and Farrell will get another pot at goal. Penalties are beginning to really hurt Australia, but the England pack deserves huge credit for the physicality they've approached this with.
41'And we are back underway. England kick off and are penalised for not releasing the ball. Great kick by Foley puts massive pressure on England inside their 22.
41'13-19 End of first half
41'13-19 Penalty goal - Owen Farrell , England
40'
40'Some half-time analysis from rugby editor Tom Hamilton in Brisbane: "The series has had plenty of build up and the first half has duly delivered. The play has been frantic, opportunistic and enthralling. "After the Wallabies drew early blood with scores from Michael Hooper and Israel Folau ? the latter a lovely move involving a neat inside ball from Bernard Foley ? it looked ominous for England. "But with Maro Itoje ruling the breakdown and Dan Cole putting in an enormous amount of work in clearing out rucks, they got a foothold and Jonathan Joseph?s predatory score where he pounced on Australia mistakes saw England take an unlikely lead. "This match has plenty left in it but England will be delighted with their six-point lead at half time."
40'Sweet kick from Farrell, beautifully struck. It's 19-13, and Eddie Jones' England have responded admirably to an absolute battering in the first 20 minutes of this game to somehow - extraordinarily - hold the lead at the break!
40'13-19 Start of second half
39'Not sure how referee Poite decides these things, but Australia are penalised at the scrum set - while having the put-in - for front row not angling straight. Always a coin-flip, that one, but Farrell could give England a six-point lead at the half. This will be the last action, regardless.
38'England get some space from the restart and Marland Yarde, for the first time today, is in open space. But his opposite number Haylett-Petty makes a wonderful tackle to drag him into touch with only acres of space and the tryline behind him.
37'Straight over. Australia trail by three.
37'13-16 Penalty goal - Bernard Foley , Australia
36'Australia earn a penalty at the scrum for the front row collapsing, and then Billy Vunipola ends up squaring up with most of the Australian pack. "I didn't do anything!" says Billy as innocently as possible. Ref Poite sends him away and three points are available for the Aussies. Foley's kicking, however, hasn't been exemplary so far.
33'Brutal handling from Mike Brown from a deep kick and that's as rudimentary a knock-on as you'll see. Australia get a gift of a scrum in England territory which might help them get their feet back under them after a one-two sucker punch.
33'10-16 Conversion - Owen Farrell , England
32'Well that's absolutely absurd. Loose pass from Folau to Foley, who can't handle it, then the mistake is compounded by more poor handling and Jonathan Joseph pounces. Somehow, somehow... England are winning!
32'TRY!! FOR ENGLAND!! HUGE MISTAKE BY AUSTRALIA!
32'10-14 Try - Jonathan Joseph , England
31'Meanwhile, another penalty for England and Australian indiscipline is letting the tourists be competitive here. Only one side playing running rugby, but both sides in the running. Farrell slots from the left, sweetly, and it's 10-9. Australia would be three or four rounds to the good if this was boxing, mind you.
31'10-9 Penalty goal - Owen Farrell , England
30'Luther Burrell has been forced off, possibly permanently, bringing George Ford back into the England fold only 30 minutes into the game. Farrell moves to centre, Ford at fly-half - as it was during virtually all of the Six Nations.
30'
29'And it is going down as an obstruction. NO TRY! England off the hook a bit there, in truth.
29'TRY! Out of absolutely nowhere! Australia have their third try... or do they? Ref Poite wants a look at a potential obstruction. England can only cross their fingers that there is an excuse for just how open Bernard Foley ended up before breaking through the gain line like he had an invisibility cloak on him.
29'Substitute on - George Ford , England
29'Player substituted - Luther Burrell , England
29'Player substituted - Rob Horne , Australia
29'Substitute on - Christian Leali'ifano , Australia
28'He does. England only four points back after an opening quarter that couldn't have gone a lot worse.
28'10-6 Penalty goal - Owen Farrell , England
26'Another penalty against Australia for being offside at the ruck. Almost exactly the same position as the last penalty, bang in front of the posts on the 22. Farrell will surely add three from there.
26'England get off the hook as Folau kicks straight into touch after an exchange of long punts, and England will have a lineout on the Aussie 22.
25'Substitute on - James Horwill , Australia
25'Player substituted - Rob Simmons , Australia
24'England trying to get some ground back but they're eventually pinged for not releasing and Australia will get to turn the tables once again. Rob Simmons currently receiving treatment having been brought down heavily at the previous lineout. He's going to need to come off for a check-up. ON comes James Horwill to a huge reception!
22'Australia's handling across the backs has been wonderful so far. It's making England's defence have to cover an awful lot of ground quickly. And that's where the opportunities are coming from. Another good spell of possession by the Aussies and they're set well in England territory.
21'This could not be more in front of the posts. Farrell kicks it up and over and it's 10-3.
21'10-3 Penalty goal - Owen Farrell , England
19'England are awarded a penalty and they initially take a quick tap, but once that is called back by referee Poite, they have a rethink and Farrell will go for the points from in front of the posts.
18'Great footwork from Jonathan Joseph and that's England's first line break of the day. He ships inside to Mike Brown but he is left all on his own and is turned over inside the Aussie 22. An exchange of kicks and England try to build again with Farrell and Joseph.
17'Foley with the kick from left of the uprights. An easier one than the first attempt - but he hits the post! Nothing like as clockwork a day for Foley's boot as it was against England in the Rugby World Cup.
16'
16'10-0 Try - Israel Folau , Australia
15'Brilliant feet from Pocock makes yet more yards and Australia are 10 metres from the England line. Foley, to Folau. TRY! That was easy. Far too easy if you're an England fan, and maybe disappointingly easy if you're a Wallaby.
13'Australia really making great progress down each flank. Haylett-Petty makes a good break down the right, then Folau takes his turn down the left. England in reverse gear once again.
13'
13'After an age trying to get the scrum set, referee Poite tires of playing headmaster. "We won't be playing this way," he tells the front rows. Then, after finally getting things moving, he penalises England for - essentially - not pushing.
12'England are trying to take some of the sting out of things just now - Australia are stretching the game right across the width of the pitch and England will benefit from keeping it tight. Scrum for England at the Aussie 10m line.
9'Conversion from Bernard Foley doesn't have enough right-to-left on it, and the score stays at 5-0.
9'TRY AUSTRALIA! Folau with the break! Brilliant running from the fullback. It went wide to Hooper who is brought down, then as the ball is recycled, Anthony Watson commits from wide and Hooper is there again for the easy touch down in the corner.
9'5-0 Try - Michael Hooper , Australia
7'Kuridrani gets a towel and some vaseline in attention for his cut forehead, which gives everyone a breather. Dylan Hartley and Dan Cole look particularly relieved by that.
6'England were awarded a penalty for all of that but Farrell misses touch to the delight of the home crowd. It's now long-bomb ping-pong, with Marland Yarde blasting it into touch around halfway to break the tedium.
5'Bit of a disagreement at the ensuing lineout and some shirt holding and squaring up going on between the two packs. Stephen Moore gets a bit of a talking to from ref Poite.
5'Another penalty for England and Farrell will get to clear their lines. Meawhile, Tevita Kuridrani has blood down the middle of his forehead - he's the one who has made most of the running for Australia so far.
3'
3'England are really stretched and Australia have got to the 5m line. But England have turned the ball over and it looks like it was Maro Itoje making his first huge contribution of the tour. That was vital as Australia looked all but certain to score.
2'Clearance gets to the 10m line, and Robshaw wins the lineout from Hartley's throw. England burrowing towards halfway, and a first carry for Mako Vunipola gets stood up with a huge hit and a huge cheer. Australia turn England over and start to build down the left. Then towards the right. Then back left. Australia making a fast start and moving the ball smartly across the backs.
1'Immediately an England penalty deep in their own 22, with Australia not rolling away.
1'And away we go!
1'Romain Poite from France is today's referee. Australia will kick off.
1'Anthems done, and looking round the stands we'd guess it's a 75-25 split in favour of Australia. But that's a decent "travelling" support behind the English.
1'
1'
1'Here come the Wallabies! Huge ovation for them from the Suncorp Stadium crowd - but you get the sense there's some nervous tension in that atmosphere. Anthems, then we're go!
1'Dylan Hartley leads the England team out on to the pitch first - and there's a decent smattering of jeering but on the whole a pretty generous welcome for the tourists.
1'The teams are making their final preparations in the changing rooms, and wishing their teammates well with man-hugs and bellowing. It's nearly time...
