Sredojevic slams woeful PSL finishing

Orlando Pirates coach Milutin Sredojevic is bemoaning the standard of finishing in South Africa's Premier Soccer League as the former Uganda coach settles into his new job in charge of the glamour club.

The 48-year-old Serbian, back at the club for a second spell after a decade away from the South African game, has been bemused by the poor standard of finishing, long a characteristic of the PSL where rarely any top marksmen emerge.

"If I was an excuse-maker I'd say it is the job's coach is get to players into the last third and then it is up to their creativity to finish the work," he said as Pirates went through a fourth unbeaten game in the new league season and sit level on top of the table with eight points.

"We are in a process. As a team we are supposed to have variety and better solutions in finishing situations, especially from the sides, from crosses and from shooting from distance when chances arise. And, of course, in set-piece situations."

Pirates drew 0-0 at fellow unbeaten club Maritzburg United on Friday.

"We dominated with several set pieces, however, despite good service, we allowed their Ghanaian goalkeeper (Richard) Ofori to pick all the ball outs of the air despite having agreed before with the players that someone needed to work underneath him to block his access path.

"But we won't dwell on what has happened but rather look proactively forward to correct and improve that and be much better in our next game against Cape Town City on Tuesday."

Srejedovic, who has also coached in Ethiopia, Rwanda and the Sudan and been on the African continent for the last 16, has been tasked with reviving Pirates after a horror last season in which they finishing 11th and were handed a 4-0 hiding the country's national cup final.
