Ghana Player Ratings vs. USA: How did the Black Stars fare?

Asamoah Gyan scored his 50th international goal against Ethiopia EPA/Christian Thompson

The mixed start to Kwesi Appiah's second tenure as Ghana coach continued on Saturday with a 2-1 defeat by the United States in East Hartford.

It was another flawed display, with Asamoah Gyan's excellent penalty failing to mask some of his teammates' struggles.

In this feature, KweséESPN rate and review Ghana's players after their latest loss.

Richard Ofori: The Ghana stopper didn't react early enough when the ball broke from a free kick before Dom Dwyer smashed it home and was then lucky to stay on after upending the forward as he bore down goal.

Overall, Ofori had a decent game, was strong in aerial situations and prevented Ghana from going 3-0 down after an error by substitute Nicholas Opoku. He also pulled stunning point blank save from Alejandro Bedoya. 6/10

Rashid Sumaila: Until he went off in the first half, Sumaila had a steady game, getting the tackles, tracking back and picking his moments well to join the attack. 5/10

Lumor Agbenyenu: Another good day at the office for the 1860 Munich left-back, who rarely lost out in a one-on-one situation, defended solidly and always seemed to find the right ball when Ghana attacked. 7/10

John Boye: Not one of his best days. Too often, the centre-back was caught on the wrong side of his marker, rarely won a tackle and was caught flat-footed. For all his experience, Boye seemed to be in a trance too often, allowing Dwyer to dominate him. However, he still has moments of excellence when he put in last-ditch tackles. 5/10

Jerry Akaminko has worked hard to come back from injury after two years, out but didn't exactly cover himself in glory when playing with Boye in the middle or at right-back after Sumaila's injury. 5/10

Ebenezer Ofori: The VfB Stuttgart man impressed once again with that dynamic left foot, but it was his defensive duties that shone brightest against the USA as he got stuck in tackles, tracked back to win balls and provided stability and creativity in a midfield that at time struggled to cope. 7/10

David Accam: The Chicago Fire man is having a fine time at club level but put in another unconvincing 45 minutes out wide for Ghana. He was full of endeavour but the final ball always seemed to lack the quality required before Appiah took him off at half time. 5/10

Frank Acheampong had his moments, but like Accam, his final ball just wasn't good enough. He always seemed to be caught in two minds at the decisive moment, especially when he was playing on the right, about whether to deliver the final ball with his right foot or his left foot. In the end it cost the team vital opportunities. 6/10

Mohammed Abu was as unconvincing as it got. He could hardly hold unto the ball, and his passing was off as he struggled with the pace of the game. It was little wonder that Kwesi Appiah replaced him after just 30 minutes. 4/10

Raphael Dwamena: The FC Zurich striker didn't get a lot of opportunities for goal but his hold-up and link-up play with the forwards was brilliant. As the midfield struggled to provide the required support for the front two, he dropped deep and run at defenders, often to good effect. 6/10

Asamoah Gyan: It was a typical Gyan day. He missed a penalty to make it 1-1 on the stroke of half time, and then scored a stunning free kick to pull one back in the second half after the USA had taken the lead. Those two moments summed up Gyan's day too; a number of misplaced passes and crosses sprinkled with the odd moments of brilliance. 8/10

Substitutes

Isaac Sackey: New boy Sackey had an evening to forget against Mexico, but was much improved against the USA. His introduction for Abu after just 30 minutes provided some stability for the midfield especially with his tough tackling as he closed down the hosts. 6/10

Nicholas Opoku: The Berekum Chelsea defender had his moments, especially in the second half as he mopped things up at the back for Ghana. However, he was also prone to too many errors that put the rest of the team under enormous pressure. Not the greatest of debuts. 5/10

Thomas Agyepong injected good pace and crossing when he was introduced in the second half for Acheampong, but there were many erratic moments too when he just could not pick out the right pass. 5/10

Majeed Waris and Samuel Sarfo did not play enough minutes to be rated.
