Colombia boss Jose Pekerman: James Rodriguez needs regular football

Colombia coach Jose Pekerman has urged James Rodriguez to leave Real Madrid to find regular first-team football, saying he has "no doubts" that things will change in the summer.

James, 25, has become a fringe player at the Bernabeu since Zinedine Zidane took charge 18 months ago, starting just 13 league games last season.

Reports in Spain suggest he will be sold, and Marca reported Pekerman as saying: "It is incredible that a player of James' level doesn't play regularly.

"His performances, his quality and his numbers have been good. It's difficult to maintain that long-term, though, when you're in a situation which you have to change.

"I don't want to take responsibility for telling him what to do, but he knows what is required to resolve his situation -- and I have no doubts that the situation will improve one way or another.

"For the sake of the Colombian national team, it is always good for James to have continuity at club level."

James joined Madrid from Monaco for €80 million after the 2014 World Cup, and president Florentino Perez reportedly wants to recover a similar amount.

French club Paris Saint-Germain looked to be closest to landing the midfielder earlier this summer, but president Nasser Al-Khelaifi denied a move.

Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal have also been linked, but the London Evening Standard reported that Chelsea were not prepared to pay £70m (€79.3m).

It said it was unlikely that the Premier League champions would part with that sort of sum "for a fringe player."
