Time for Razak Braimah to resurrect his career at Sundowns

It is career resurrection time for Ghana goalkeeper Razak Braimah after his move to African champions Mamelodi Sundowns was confirmed by the club on Tuesday.

The 30-year-old put pen-to-paper on a five-year deal after a medical in Accra in a move that he hopes will fast-track his ascension back into international football, though but the choice of club will be curious for many in West Africa.

The South African Premier Soccer League has rarely been kind to Ghanaian players. For goalkeepers in particular it has been a near graveyard.

Braimah's task to start with is a colossal one. He has to unseat Uganda international and current Africa Player of The Year in Africa Denis Onyango, a man considered the best shot-stopper on the continent.

As if that is not enough, he will effectively be fighting to be back-up with Zambia international Kennedy Mwene.

The early verdict is that like many Ghanaian goalkeepers to have joined PSL clubs, he is simply adding to the numbers and that he will only be fast-tracking his exit from the big stage. The examples are compelling.

Fatau Dauda played three games at Orlando Piraetes after arriving on a high following his breakthrough as Ghana's first-choice goalkeeper at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations. He is now getting his career back on track at Enyimba in Nigeria.

Daniel Agyei, whose heroics in the penalty shootout helped Ghana to the Under-20 World Cup, could not thrive at lowly Free State Stars and is now in Tanzania trying to pick up the pieces.

Braimah is a man supreme on confidence. He has always insisted he is good enough for any level, but four games the whole of last season suggests Cordoba didn't think so, even though he has blamed that and the decision not to renew his contract on his commitment to the Black Stars.

So in many ways a return to the side will be just reward for the gamble he has taken in joining Sundowns. Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah will be watching.

Over the next season the PSL season will be crucial to his plans because that could be where the battle for Ghana's goalkeeping shirt will be fought, with Braimah at Sundowns and current number one Richard Ofori on the books of Maritzburg United.

Both will be hoping they buck a disturbing trend.
