The 2018 edition is the first time in 32 years that Germany have failed to win their opening match at a World Cup. The last occasion of them failing to win their first game was in Mexico in 1986, when they were held to a 1-1 draw by Uruguay. Germany's last defeat in an opening match came four years prior to that, when Algeria beat them 2-1 in the 1982 tournament in Spain. Germany made the final in both of these campaigns, but lost to Italy and Argentina in 1982 and 1986, respectively.

Since 2002, three of the five reigning champions have failed to win their opening game at the World Cup. Besides Germany in this tournament, France lost 1-0 to Senegal in 2002, while Spain were thrashed 5-1 by Netherlands in 2014. Italy did slightly better in 2010 by salvaging a 1-1 draw against Paraguay, but ultimately none of those three teams managed to make it out of the group stages.

Hirving Lozano's goal was only Mexico's second ever against Germany in the World Cup, from four matches. In 1998, Luis Hernandez had given Mexico the lead in the round of 16 before Jurgen Klinsmann and Oliver Bierhoff scored second-half goals to take Germany to a 2-1 win.

During their winning campaign in Brazil in 2014, Germany had trailed all of their opponents for a combined total of just eight minutes, all of which came against Ghana in the group stages. Asamoah Gyan had put the Ghanians 2-1 up in the 63rd minute, with Miroslav Klose scoring in the 71st minute to tie the game at 2-2. Lozano's goal in the 35th minute meant Germany trailed for more than 55 minutes on Sunday.

Mexico become just the first team since Italy to have kept a clean sheet against Germany on more than one occasion. Italy hold the record (three) for most shutouts against Germany, while Mexico had kept Germany goalless through 120 minutes of their World Cup quarterfinal clash in 1986, which was won by the latter 4-1 on penalties.

Rafael Marquez became just the third player to appear in five World Cups, joining his compatriot Antonio Carbajal (between 1950 and 1966) and Lothar Matthaus (1982 to 1998) of Germany. Marquez also took the captain's armband when he came on as a second-half substitute, which makes him the first player to captain his country at four World Cups.

In the 10 matches played in this World Cup thus far, three of the teams with the most shots have failed to win their matches. Peru lost to Denmark after firing 17 shots, while Argentina's 27 shots only helped them a 1-1 draw against Iceland. Germany managed a total of 25 shots in the course of their 1-0 defeat.
