Although Mexico has yet to find a replacement for former manager Juan Carlos Osorio, the national team still has two upcoming friendlies to prepare for in early September. With matches set against Uruguay and the United States in the next FIFA international break, a number of players will be given a chance to shine the initial stages of the post-Osorio era.
With an eye towards selection for El Tri, here are the latest best and worst performances we've seen from Mexicans at home and abroad.
Warming Up
Raul Jimenez | 27 | Forward | Wolves | England
Why he's here: It doesn't get any better than scoring on your Premier League debut. On Saturday, Jimenez helped salvage a point for Wolves with a late goal in the 2-2 draw at home against Everton.
What this means: The 27-year-old is already thriving as the lone striker in Wolves' 3-4-3 formation. Given time, it's going to be exciting to see what kind of connection Jimenez can continue to build with players such as Ruben Neves, Diogo Jota and Helder Costa.
Hirving Lozano | 23 | Forward | PSV | Netherlands
Why he's here: "Chucky" wasted no time in his return to the Dutch club. In Saturday's 4-0 win over Utrecht, Lozano stepped up with a goal in his first match of the new Eredivisie season.
What this means: The winger will continue to be a crucial PSV player, for now. If he maintains his brilliant form that was also seen last season, it will only be a matter of time before a bigger European club scoops him up.
Adrian Aldrete | 30 | Defender | Cruz Azul | Mexico
Why he's here: In a stacked and impressive Cruz Azul squad, Aldrete has found a way to stand out with his interceptions, passes and knack for shots. On Sunday, the high-pressing left-back gained even more attention after providing an assist in the 91st minute of the 1-1 away draw against Tijuana.
What this means: Despite the fact that the 30-year-old isn't a player for the future of the national team, it wouldn't be much of a surprise if he were to sneak into the call-up list for the September friendlies.
Hector Herrera | 28 | Midfielder | Porto | Portugal
Why he's here: Although fellow countryman Jesus Corona scored for Porto, Herrera is worthy of just as much as credit in the 5-0 victory against Chaves on Saturday. The team captain took charge of the midfield, covered an immense amount of ground and finished the game as the leading distributor for the winning side.
What this means: Whether Herrera ends up leaving Porto in the near future or staying with the team, there's no doubt that the 28-year-old is playing at the very peak of his abilities.
Cooling Down
Jesus Molina | 30 | Midfielder | Monterrey | Mexico
Why he's here: The 30-year-old defensive midfielder, who many said Mexico was missing during the World Cup, has yet to earn a start for Monterrey this season. In the 3-0 loss to Club America on Saturday, Molina was left on the bench for Los Rayados.
What this means: A return to the national team will likely have to wait. Before the veteran attempts to regain El Tri relevance, he'll have to first fight for more minutes with Monterrey.
Javier Hernandez | 30 | Forward | West Ham | England
Why he's here: After being left out of West Ham's starting XI on Sunday, the striker eventually stepped onto the field in the 62nd minute of the 4-0 loss to Liverpool. Hernandez finished the game without a single shot and only two completed passes.
What this means: Regardless of his form, Hernandez will continue to be a key player for Mexico. That said, an in-form Jimenez does have the capabilities to gradually steal national team minutes away from him.
Uriel Antuna | 20 | Midfielder | Groningen | Netherlands
Why he's here: Following a full preseason with Groningen, it was disappointing to see Antuna on the bench in Sunday's 5-1 loss to Vitesse. Since joining the club in August of last year, the 20-year-old has only collected a total of five starts.
What this means: A call-up in September would be unexpected. In spite of his place in Europe, Antuna will need to do much more with Groningen before proving his worth with El Tri.
Diego Reyes | 25 | Defender | Free Agent
Why he's here: Simply put, he has no club. While the rest of his teammates are finding their form in Mexico and abroad, Reyes has been left training in Mexico City without a contract.
What this means: Although the defender will maintain a place with the national team, it's still extremely worrying to see him without a club to play for. Whether the reports are true or not that he has offers to consider, the 25-year-old has yet to sign a contract with a new club.
