Ramos, Kroos, Griezmann among those Man United missed since 2013

Manchester United are battling to secure their top transfer targets before the club depart on the preseason tour of the United States.

Jose Mourinho would like four new signings before the flight to Los Angeles on July 9 but, so far, the only deal they have been able to announce is the arrival of defender Victor Lindelof from Benfica.

United's summer started by cooling interest in Antoine Griezmann after Atletico Madrid were handed a transfer ban, and the striker went on to sign a new contract extension. But it is not the first time United have suffered disappointment in the transfer market since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013.

You could even make a starting XI of players they have missed out on ...

GK: Keylor Navas

Real Madrid goalkeeper Navas only became a target when David De Gea seemed set to sign for the Spanish club in 2015. United agreed terms with the Costa Rica international before De Gea's move to the Bernabeu fell through at the last minute. In the end, he was one player United fans were happy to miss out on as it meant they got to keep their No. 1.

RB: Dani Alves

United were linked with Alves before he signed a new contract at Barcelona in 2015 and again before he moved to Juventus on a free transfer a year later. Louis van Gaal was chasing a new right-back in 2015 after deciding Rafael didn't fit the bill. In the end, the Dutchman signed Matteo Darmian from Torino for £12.7 million.

CB: Sergio Ramos

Van Gaal wanted Ramos from Real Madrid in 2015 before he would allow De Gea to move in the opposite direction. Ramos, for his part, played along in the hope he could squeeze a new contract out of Real Madrid and it worked. In August 2015, he signed a new five-year deal at the Bernabeu.

CB: Mats Hummels

Van Gaal wanted Hummels when he arrived at Old Trafford in 2014, but the German defender decided to stay at Borussia Dortmund. He eventually left Dortmund for Bayern Munich in 2016 for around €35m and afterwards admitted talks had taken place with United and that a deal, at one point, had been "close."

LB: Leighton Baines

David Moyes wanted to sign Baines and Marouane Fellaini from former club Everton when he took over at United in 2013. United offered £12m for Baines, which was rejected, and then £28m for Baines and Fellaini together, which Everton described as "derisory and insulting." Moyes eventually signed Fellaini for £27.5m on deadline day and Baines stayed at Goodison Park.

CM: Toni Kroos

United were interested in Kroos in 2013 and Moyes thought he would secure a deal for the German midfielder a year later. But Moyes was sacked before his second summer transfer window and Van Gaal moved on to other targets. Kroos eventually left Bayern Munich for Real Madrid in 2014 where he has won two Champions League trophies and one league title.

CM: Cesc Fabregas

Moyes was convinced Fabregas was ready to leave Barcelona for United in 2013, just two years after he had quit Arsenal to return to Camp Nou. Ed Woodward left the tour of Australia to attend to what was described as "urgent transfer business" but a summer-long transfer saga came to nothing and Fabregas stayed at Barcelona before moving to Chelsea 12 months later.

AM: Antoine Griezmann

United were heavily linked with Griezmann this summer but the deal was complicated by Atletico Madrid's transfer ban even though, at one stage, the Frenchman rated his chances of moving to Old Trafford at "six out of 10." United took a step back to concentrate on signing a striker to fill the void left by Zlatan Ibrahimovic. And on the same day, Atletico's transfer ban was confirmed and Griezmann hinted he would stay for at least another season.

FW: Cristiano Ronaldo

United thought there was a genuine chance to bringing Ronaldo back in 2013 to give Moyes a flying start as Ferguson's replacement. The Portuguese forward has continually left the door open for a return to Old Trafford but, then, he has also said repeatedly he wants to end his career at Real Madrid too. Speculation about a move to United has resurfaced this summer but he looks set to stay at the Bernabeu once more.

FW: Gareth Bale

United tried to hijack Bale's move from Tottenham to Real Madrid in 2013 by making a higher offer than the Spanish giants' £85m. But Bale had his heart set on a move to the Spanish capital and United missed out. They will, though, be at the front of the queue if the Welshman ever decides it is time to return to the Premier League.

ST: Thomas Muller

Van Gaal knew Muller well from their time together at Bayern Munich and wanted the striker at Old Trafford in 2015. Muller admitted he would be tempted to work with the Dutchman again and that it would be hard to turn down the riches on offer in the Premier League. Bayern Munich later revealed they had rejected a bid of €100m for the German.
