Cristiano Ronaldo tears in pictures: How his Juventus nightmare unfolded

Cristiano Ronaldo cried off on Wednesday night as his Champions League debut for Juventus ended with a controversial red card.

Ronaldo was dismissed after a clash with Valencia's Jeison Murillo was spotted by the assistant referee and communicated to German referee Felix Brych, who drew a red card from his top pocket.

It was Ronaldo's first red card in 154 Champions League games, and the decision means he could miss a return to Old Trafford when Juventus play Manchester United next month if he gets at least a two-match ban.

Here's a look back at his nightmare evening ...

According to UEFA rules, a player who is sent off is suspended for the next match in a UEFA club competition. And in case of "serious offences," a UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body could increase the punishment and even extend it to other competitions.

Cristiano Ronaldo's sister, Katia Aveiro, has come out in defence of him after his red card.

She wrote on Instagram: "A football disgrace ... justice will be done ... they want to destroy my brother, but God never sleeps ... disgraceful."

Ronaldo is the Champions League all-time leading scorer with 120 goals and led Madrid to the title the past three years in a row.
