Riyad Mahrez retired? Riddle over 'hoax' claims on Leicester star's Facebook

Leicester City fans' hearts were sent a flutter when a post on Riyad Mahrez's official Facebook page appeared to announce a shock retirement.

The update stated that the Algerian had been forced to bring a premature end to his professional career on medical grounds.

"After the last consultation with many doctors, I've decided to stay away from football," the message read.

"As my time as a football player comes to an end, I would like to say few words.

"I want to thank everybody for the kindness and support they have shown me in this incredible city, you will be always in my heart."

The post didn't appear on any other of Mahrez's social media platforms, leading many supporters to conclude that the Foxes star had simply had his Facebook account hacked into.

Still, many were left to compliment the attention to detail on display.

The retirement announcement has since been deleted from Mahrez's Facebook page, though an denial (or confirmation) is still forthcoming. In short, it remains something of a mystery.

Leicester are set to play West Brom this coming Saturday. We suggest you keep an eye out for Mahrez on the team sheet -- or not, as the case may be!
