Dunga, Zico among candidates 'interested' in Thailand head coach job

Brazil's former World Cup-winning captain and ex-head coach Dunga is the latest big name to be linked with the position of Thailand head coach following last week's resignation of Kiatisuk Senamuang.

According to the Bangkok Post, the Football Association of Thailand (FAT) officials have acknowledged that two Brazilians have expressed an interest in the role.

While they were not named, ESPN FC understands that the two coaches in the frame are Dunga and fellow Brazil legend Zico -- the man after whom Kiatisuk earned his nickname.

It is almost a year since Dunga was dismissed by Brazil for a second time, following their exit from the 2016 Copa America Centenario at the group stage.

Dunga's first spell in charge of Brazil came from 2006 to 2010. During that period, he led the team to the 2007 Copa America title and the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup. A quarterfinal exit to the Netherlands at the 2010 World Cup spelled the end of his first spell with the national side.

Four years and a brief time with Brazilian club Internacional separated Dunga's first spell with Brazil and the second. Following the disastrous 7-1 semifinal defeat to Germany in the 2014 World Cup, the CBF again turned to 1994's triumphant World Cup skipper to pick up the pieces.

Unfortunately, things did not get much better and a poor 2015 Copa America campaign was followed by an even worse effort in 2016's Copa America Centenario. As a result, Dunga was axed for a second time.

While Dunga's track record may not inspire a great deal of confidence, he does have plenty of big-game experience at the highest level as both player and manager. He is also very familiar with Asia, having spent four years with Jubilo Iwata in the J. League between 1995 and 1998.

Dunga is certainly not the first big name to be mentioned as a candidate for the Thailand post. Former Leicester boss Claudio Ranieri, former Argentina manager Alejandro Sabella and another former World Cup winning captain -- Germany's Lothar Matthaus -- have been suggested as potential successors to Kiatisuk.

And Dunga is not the only Brazilian to be linked to the role, with the Zico also said to be under consideration.

Like Dunga, the Brazil legend has strong links with Japan, having played in the J.League for several years before managing the Samurai Blue for four years and leading them to the 2006 World Cup in Germany. His contribution to the development of football in the country is so highly valued that he was elected to Japan's football Hall of Fame in 2016.

With the Football Associaton of Thailand (FAT) and Japanese Football Association (JFA) having recently signed an MOU, Zico's links with the JFA may facilitate any move.

Two intriguing developments took place earlier this week when former Thailand boss Winfried Schaefer and former Manchester United assistant Rene Meulensteen separately met FAT president Somyot Poompanmoung.

Whoever the FAT finally appoint, there is certainly much interest in the position from a range of candidates. It remains to be seen how much of this is genuine and realistic. An announcement from the FAT may not be imminent, and the guessing game goes on.
