Sundram books Doha friendly for Singapore ahead of Bahrain qualifier

Afghanistan or Yemen are looming as Singapore's next international opponents, ahead of their opening qualifier of the 2019 AFC Asian Cup third round, away to Bahrain on March 28.

Head coach V. Sundramoorthy has confirmed that the Lions will seek to meet West Asian opponents on March 23 in Doha, ahead of their difficult assignment against the Bahrainis.

"Being able to play us in Doha will be ideal for us as we can then cut travelling time to Bahrain to about an hour," he told The New Paper.

"[Bahrain] are a strong team, but we believe if we can play well as a team, we can get a positive result to kick start our campaign."

Coach Sundram will oversee another get together of his Singapore squad in Geylang on Monday before an extended training camp with his players from March 13 when the S.League takes a break.

"It is very important to get the players together for bonding and understanding purposes, as we work on finer match details," he said.

"We will call up a bigger pool of players this coming Monday before narrowing down the squad to 23, plus two or three backups for the following Monday's training."

PDRM FA's Safuwan Baharudin and CE L'Hospitalet's Hariss Harun will return to Singapore from abroad for the pre-qualifier preparations.

After six consecutive defeats in previous matches against Bahrain, Sundram is tipped to select an experienced side for the trip to Riffa, with the likes of Safuwan, Hariss, Daniel Bennett, Khairul Amri and Hassan Sunny all expected to be in the starting lineup.

He added that Hariss will benefit from his European exposure during the third-round qualification campaign for the Asian Cup.

"I'm pleased that Hariss has joined up with the Spanish team," he said. "Even though it is in a lower division, I'm sure it is of a high standard. I hope he will be able to get some games over there, but it would also be good if we can have him for two weeks to prepare for the Bahrain game."
