Power Rankings: Royals suffer steep drop

The Royals have really struggled in August despite Melky Cabrera, Lorenzo Cain and Mike Moustakas all hitting well. The problem is that no one else on the team has been good.

Race for the 2nd AL wild card

ESPN Stats and Information's Mark Simon examines the wild-card chances for the Rays, Twins, Angels, Orioles, Royals and Mariners.

The Royals' weekend teetered on the brink of disaster but after a 14-6 romp over the White Sox on Sunday, Kansas City heads for O'Hare International Airport in a much cheerier mood than they might have. Whit Merrifield drove in five runs and finished a double shy of the cycle to lead KC's 16-hit attack. The Royals took two of three in Chicago, taking Saturday's game 5-4 when Melky Cabrera hit a clutch two-run homer as KC snapped a five-game skid. Ned Yost hoped the comeback might spark his club and if Sunday's outburst was any evidence, it has. Now back over the .500 mark, the Royals head for Oakland to play the A's.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but when you've walked Royals SS Alcides Escobar twice in a game, your pitching staff may not be functioning in an optimal fashion. Escobar has indeed walked twice today against the White Sox. He hadn't drawn a walk since July 19 and still has just 11 walks in 469 plate appearances this season. Escobar had not walked twice in a game since Aug. 10 of last season.

Wow. It's one thing to miss the cut-off man. It's whole other thing to miss the cut-off man when there isn't even a runner trying to advance. With runners on first and second, Kansas City's Drew Butera hit a sharp single to left, scooped up by White Sox LF Leury Garcia. The runners were content to move up one base apiece, but Garcia uncorked a throw over the heads of the cut-off guy and catcher Kevan Smith. Cheslor Cuthbert raced home and the Royals grabbed an early 1-0 lead in Chicago. It's now 3-0 after a two-run single from Lorenzo Cain.

The Royals pick up a desperately needed win, beating the White Sox 5-4 on Saturday to snap a five-game losing streak. Melky Cabrera burned his old team with a go-ahead, two-run homer in the eighth to get KC back to .500. After a week of disastrous bullpen work, the Royals got scoreless innings to close it out from Joakim Soria and Kelvin Herrera.

Chilly evening in Chicago where the suddenly hot White Sox are about to take on a Royals team that needs a win in the worst way. The longball could be a big factor tonight. Since the beginning of the 2015 season, James Shields ranks third among all pitchers in homers allowed per nine innings. Ian Kennedy ranks sixth. Guess who is squaring off in tonight's mound matchup?

There were a couple of interesting developments from my morning run of rest-of-season simulations today. For the first time, the Dodgers' average win total in my system reached 116. Also, the Cardinals have edged ahead of the Cubs in power rating and because of that, St. Louis now has better odds than Chicago of winning the NL Central (50 percent to 45). And the plummeting Royals' playoff odds have now dropped from a high point of 52 percent a couple of weeks ago to 7.5 percent.

AL wild-card race heating up

Entering Friday, the Mariners and Rays are tied for the second wild-card spot, with five other teams trailing by 3 1/2 games or less.

Runs allowed by the Royals' bullpen by game since July 29: 4-0-1-3-3-2-2-1-0-4-4-5-6. That's 35 runs, 31 earned, over 43 2/3 innings for a 6.49 ERA. In the four-game sweep against St. Louis, the KC relievers allowed 19 runs, 17 earned, in 16 innings for a 9.56 ERA. My hot take: That's not good.
