Texas Southern stays in 3rd place, tops Alabama A&M 58-56

NORMAL, Ala. -- Donte Clark scored at the basket and hit a pair of free throws in the closing minutes as Texas Southern held on to beat Alabama A&M, 58-56 in a Southwestern Athletic Conference battle Saturday night.

Texas Southern rebounded from a loss at home to conference leader Arkansas-Pine Bluff and entered the night tied with Grambling State for third place.

The Tigers took a 33-27 lead at intermission, but Alabama A&M grabbed the lead with four minutes left on Andre Kennedy's layup, 52-51. Brian Carey put Texas Southern back in front for good on a three-point play with 3:41 left and Clark iced the game with his free throws with 1:16 left.

Clark and Jerry Perry each scored 14 points to lead the Tigers (5-16, 5-3), with Carey adding 12 and Lamont Walker pulling down nine boards.

De'Ederick Petty scored nine points to lead Alabama A&M (2-19, 2-6).
