Peters hits late FTs to help Nicholls beat Houston Baptist

HOUSTON -- Roddy Peters scored 18 of his 24 points in the second half, including two free throws with 21 seconds left, to help Nicholls beat Houston Baptist 72-71 on Saturday night.

Peters made 8 of 15 from the field, 8 of 12 from the free-throw line, grabbed eight rebounds and had four assists. Stevie Repichowski hit three 3-pointers and finished with 11 points and Tevon Saddler scored 10 for Nicholls (9-8, 3-1 Southland Conference).

Ian DuBose hit a 3-pointer to give Houston Baptist (4-12, 0-3) a 69-66 lead with 1:54 to play. Peters answered with a jumper late in the shot clock and, after a steal by Nicholls' Ryghe Lyons, Peters was fouled by David Caraher on a shot in the lane. After the shot, HBU's Edward Hardt and Peters were each called for a technical foul. Peters missed both foul shots before Nicholls' Jahvaughn Powell and David Caraher traded two free throws apiece to give the Huskies a 71-70 lead, and the ball, with 58.4 seconds left. After another HBU turnover, Peters' free throws gave the Colonels the lead.

DuBose missed a layup, Caraher grabbed the offensive board and missed the putback. He pulled down another offensive rebound, but Hardt missed a runner in the lane as time expired.

Caraher led the Huskies with 26 points and DuBose scored 19 with 10 rebounds.

The game featured 14 ties and 15 lead changes.
