Roma beat AC Milan at San Siro in Europa League first leg

AS Roma rode a Gianluca Mancini goal to a 1-0 win over AC Milan in the first leg of their Europa League quarterfinal at San Siro on Thursday.

High-flying Milan, sitting second in Serie A, looked like a shell of themselves throughout the match and conceded early when Paulo Dybala's pinpoint header found Mancini in the center of the box.

It was Roma's first win against Milan since 2019.

"We should have been more courageous," Milan coach Stefano Pioli said. "We created some chances, but I didn't see the same quality as in the last matches.

"This team can do more, I know that. I didn't expect the defeat, we weren't precise, we lacked the flair."

Milan will travel to the capital for the second leg next Thursday.

Portuguese champions Benfica claimed a 2-1 home win over Marseille through goals by Rafa Silva and Argentine forward Ángel Di María.
