Steve Clark helps Portland Timbers topple Columbus Crew
Steve Clark made four of his six saves in the first half to beat his former team for the second time this season -- with two different teams -- as the Portland Timbers downed the visiting Columbus Crew 3-2 at Providence Park on Wednesday.
After Niko Hansen scored in the seventh minute for Columbus, David Guzman tied it in the 18th off an assist by Andy Polo. Polo made it 2-1 in the 37th minute, and an own goal in the 48th minute doubled the lead for the Timbers. Hansen scored again in the third minute of stoppage time for the final margin.
Clark, who lost to Portland in the 2015 MLS Cup as a member of the Crew, made five saves for D.C. United in a 1-0 win over Columbus 1-0 on April 14.
With the Timbers being outplayed despite a 1-1 deadlock, Clark made his fourth save of the match in the 36th minute with a parry of a blistering 19-yard strike by Artur, and a minute later the Timbers had the lead.
Polo made a run from the top of the defensive box down the right side before crossing the ball and getting it back. Polo's centering header came off Crew defender Milton Valenzuela and back to Polo, who used a karate-style kick at the right post to score his first goal in his 18th MLS match.
The Timbers made it 3-1 when Samuel Armenteros' shot deflected off Crew defender Lalas Abubakar.
The Crew's early goal should have been a good sign: Columbus was 3-0-0 when scoring first on the road, while Portland was winless in nine games overall (0-5-4) when facing a 1-0 deficit.
Hansen scored from 8 yards with Valenzuela assisting for his third career goal. His first came in his MLS debut March 25, 2017, against Portland, and was the winner in the 84th minute.
