Burton stun Championship leaders Cardiff to reach Carabao Cup third round

Nigel Clough's Burton Albion burst Cardiff City's bubble as they ended their five-match unbeaten start to the season to progress to the third round of the Carabao Cup.Goals from Tom Naylor and Ben Fox sealed sweet revenge for the Brewers, who were beaten 1-0 at home by a late goal on the opening day of the Championship season by the Bluebirds. New signing Omar Bogle almost scored with his first touch on his Cardiff debut after joining from Wigan Athletic last week but, after a bright start, the home side were overrun in midfield and fell behind to Naylor's goal after failing to clear a corner.Naylor almost stuck again on the stroke of half-time and Lucas Akins was only denied by a brilliant save from Brian Murphy in the home goal less than a minute after the re-start.Cardiff then tested Connor Ripley in the Burton goal as he was forced to push away a smart shot from Cameron Coxe and was happy to see a Lee Tomlin free kick just go over the bar.The visitors doubled their lead in the 70th minute when a pin-point cross from the left by Joe Sbarra was headed home for by Fox to leave the Bluebirds with a mountain to climb.Three minutes after coming on, though, Anthony Pilkington glanced a Tomlin free-kick into the top corner to give the Championship leaders a lifeline with 14 minutes left to play.Danny Ward then pushed a great chance to equalise wide of the mark and Clough's men were able to hang on for a notable triumph.
