Wasteful Peterborough have enough to see off Luton

Peterborough eased into the third round of the FA Cup with a 2-0 success against Luton despite fluffing a catalogue of chances. The League One promotion-chasers had 34 attempts on goal as they dominated their League Two visitors at the ABAX Stadium - but they could only make a couple of them count.Top-scorer Conor Washington provided the only breakthrough of the first half when firing his 10th goal of the season 10 minutes before the break. The in-form frontman darted inside and struck with a rising rocket shot into the far corner. But the combination of errant finishing and a man-of-the-match performance from Hatters goalkeeper Mark Tyler, in his first return since a 15-year Posh career, meant the hosts' passage was not sealed until eight minutes from time by a fierce low drive from substitute Marcus Maddison. It may have been a very different game had Luton defender Luke Wilkinson not wasted a free header midway through the opening period. And only the post prevented them from levelling when keeping out a shot from Craig Mackail-Smith - a man who fired Posh to three promotions - just before the break. But Luton offered little overall as a shock rarely looked on the cards.
