Beavers QB Canfield undergoes arthroscopic shoulder surgery

CORVALLIS, Ore. -- Oregon State quarterback Sean Canfield
had arthroscopic shoulder surgery following the Beavers' Emerald
Bowl win over Maryland, coach Mike Riley said Monday.

Canfield started the first nine games before hurting his
throwing shoulder at Southern Cal on Nov. 3. The left-hander sat
out the rest of the regular season, but returned during the Dec. 28
bowl game to pass for 68 yards in relief of the injured
Lyle Moevao.

Canfield, who will be a junior next season, completed 165 of 286
pass attempts for 1,661 yards. He had nine touchdown passes and 15
interceptions. The Beavers won five of his nine starts.

"Sean will start the rehabilitation process on the shoulder as
soon as possible and is expected to return to full strength in time
for the 2008 season," Riley said.

Oregon State will enter spring practice, scheduled to begin
March 31, with Moevao, sophomore Brennan Sim and redshirt freshman
Justin Engstrom at the quarterback position. Sim and Engstrom are
walk-ons.

Riley said the Beavers might add another QB during the national
letter of intent period, which starts Feb. 6.
