Devin Haney-Juan Carlos Burgos to headline Sept. 28 tripleheader

Fast and flashy blue-chip lightweight prospect Devin Haney will fight former three-time world title challenger Juan Carlos Burgos on Sept. 28 at the Pechanga Resort Casino in Temecula, California.

The scheduled 10-round fight will headline a tripleheader on "ShoBox: The New Generation" (Showtime, 10 p.m. ET/PT), the network has announced.

Haney (19-0, 13 KOs), 19, of Las Vegas, whose own Devin Haney Promotions was recently licensed in California and will promote its first card, is coming off an impressive ninth-round knockout of Mason Menard on "ShoBox" on May 11.

Now Haney, a seven-time national junior amateur champion who turned professional in Mexico because he was too young to get a boxing license in the United States, will take on Burgos (33-2-2, 21 KOs), 30, of Mexico, whose only losses came in world title bouts.

"Burgos is a tough fighter who has been in several world title fights, so I know he's going to be ready for war," said Haney, who has sparred with the likes of Floyd Mayweather, Shawn Porter, Jessie Vargas and Rances Barthelemy. "He's been in with Mikey Garcia and Rocky Martinez, so I know he's my toughest opponent to date. I'm ready to shine once again on Showtime, give the fans another great performance and prove I'm ready to take the next step."

Burgos has won three fights in a row since losing a unanimous decision to Mikey Garcia in a 2014 junior lightweight world title fight. He also lost a unanimous decision to Hozumi Hasegawa in a 2010 featherweight world title bout. In 2013, Burgos fought to a split draw with Roman "Rocky" Martinez in a junior lightweight world title fight.

"Devin Haney is good fighter but my experience in big fights will be the difference when we step in the ring," Burgos said. "My back is against the wall and I'm ready to rise to the occasion and get this victory. He might think he's the next big thing, but I'm at a whole different level."

The co-feature will be a rematch between lightweights Thomas Mattice (13-0, 10 KOs), 28, of Cleveland, and Zhora Hamazaryan (9-1, 6 KOs), 22, a native of Armenia fighting out of Los Angeles.

They first met on July 20 in Sloan, Iowa, on "ShoBox" and Mattice, who got knocked down in the second round of an apparent one-sided fight, was awarded an eight-round split decision win that drew outrage. Hall of Fame "ShoBox" analyst Steve Farhood called it "the worst decision I've seen in the history of 'ShoBox.'"

"I didn't hesitate one second when the rematch was offered," Mattice said. "I'm going into this fight with victory on my mind, and there's nothing Hamazaryan can do to stop me. My hands will be raised once again."

Said Hamazaryan: "Everyone knows I beat Mattice in our last fight but I was robbed. Now it's time to put matters into my own hands and go for the knockout. He better be ready for the onslaught because it's coming. He went down last time, but this time he won't be getting up."

The opening bout will pit middleweights Cem Kilic (11-0, 7 KOs), 24, a native of Germany based in Los Angeles, and Donnie Marshall (9-0, 6 KOs), 29, of Raleigh, North Carolina, in an eight-round fight.

"This is the turning point in my career fighting on Showtime against another undefeated fighter," said Kilic, who is trained by Buddy McGirt and has sparred with Errol Spence Jr., Jermell Charlo, Jean Pascal and Miguel Cotto. "I'm going to leave it all in the ring and the fans are going to see a great fight. One thing is for sure: I will be victorious."

Said Marshall: "I'm ready to take my career to the next level and remain undefeated. Kilic is in for a rude awakening. He's never been in the ring with a hungry fighter like me. I'm going to win and win impressively."
