Dallas' Liz Cambage set the WNBA's single-game scoring record with 53 points Tuesday in the Wings' 104-87 victory over New York in Arlington, Texas.
Cambage, a 6-foot-8 center, made 17 of 22 shots from the field -- including 4 of 5 from 3-point range -- and 15 of 16 free throws. Her previous career high was 37, set earlier this month against Chicago. Cambage also had 10 rebounds and five blocked shots Tuesday.
She reached 50 points on a three-point play with 2:19 remaining and broke the record on an open 3-pointer from the top of the key.
"It's pretty big," Cambage said. "I've had big numbers in China, I've had big numbers in Australia, and I've heard a lot of people say I could never have big numbers here in the WNBA. So I guess this game is for y'all."
The previous single-game high in the WNBA was 51 points, set by guard Riquna Williams when she played for the current Wings franchise that was still in Tulsa as the Shock. That came in a 2013 game at San Antonio. Minnesota's Maya Moore scored 48 points in a two-overtime game in 2014, and Phoenix's Diana Taurasi had 47 in a three-OT game in 2006.
Cambage, of Australia, was drafted No. 2 overall behind Moore in 2011 by Tulsa, but she played just two seasons there -- 2011 and 2013. She had an Achilles injury in 2014 and did not play in the WNBA in 2015-17.
The franchise moved to Dallas for 2016, changing its name to the Wings, and retained Cambage's rights. She opted to return to the WNBA this year and has been a huge part of the 13-9 Wings' season. She is averaging 21.4 points and 9.2 rebounds per game.
