Gilles Simon is through to the second round at the Open Sud de France following a tight win over Yannick Maden. France's Simon, playing in front of his home crowd, needed a third-set tiebreak to beat German qualifier Maden 6-1, 4-6, 7-6 (3) on Court Patrice Dominguez Tuesday. He will face top seed David Goffin in the second round. Elsewhere in Montpellier, Lithuania's world No. 117 Ricardas Berankis defeated Julien Benneteau 6-3, 7-6 (6), while Jeremy Chardy came from a set down to see off Stefanos Tsitsipas 4-6, 7-5, 7-5 to book his place in Round 2. Carlos Taberner beat world No. 137 Norbert Gombos 7-6 (5), 7-6 (1) to secure a second-round clash with second seed Lucas Pouille.
