British No. 1 Johanna Konta faces a nail-biting finish for the coveted last spot in the WTA Finals for a second year in a row.

After Caroline Garcia's 11-match winning streak saw her surge into the eighth spot, but still short of the qualifying cut, Konta will now have to reach the final in the Kremlin Cup in order to secure the final berth.

The race took another twist when top seeded Garcia pulled out of this week's tournament in Tianjin, but was denied a wildcard into Moscow, with tournament director Aleksei Selivanenko preferring to prioritise Russian players.

Last year Konta lost her spot when defending champion Svetlana Kuznetsova retained her title in Moscow, despite Konta being present for the media obligations in Singapore.

Since losing to Venus Williams in the Wimbledon semifinals, the British No. 1 has won just two matches in Cincinnati, losing in the first round of Toronto, the US Open, Tokyo, Wuhan and Beijing.

The Kremlin Cup in Moscow will take place between 16-22 October.
