Sunday was pretty much a barren day for our experts. Two unexpected results -- with Spain dumped out by Russia and Denmark taking Croatia to penalty kicks -- almost made it a big, fat zero for everyone.
But wait! Miguel Pasquel rescued the day by actually predicting the 1-1 scoreline between Spain and Russia to claim 30 points. And that was it!
First up on Monday we have Brazil up against Mexico. El Tri have been knocked out of the competition at the exact same point at every World Cup since 1994: the round of 16. Mexico fans therefore are probably right to be a little worried, and ESPN Mexico's Ricardo Puig, our best-performing pundit, says 3-1 to Brazil. Over at ESPN Brasil, Leonardo Bertozzi goes for the same scoreline.
Every single pundit goes for Brazil. But, as we know, experts have been wrong before...
UPDATE: All seven of our pundits pick up the result thanks to Brazil's 2-0 win. Goals from Neymar and Roberto Firmino result in three of those pundits grabbing the 30-point bonus as well.
Gab Marcotti, Raphael Honigstein and Steph Brantz all nail the scoreline prediction and head into the second and final game of the day with a 20-point edge on the rest of the pack. All of our experts go for Belgium in this contest, so this one could come down to someone nailing the scoreline prediction. The pressure is on.
Our second quarterfinal sees what, on paper at least, looks to be a one-sided affair as much-fancied Belgium meet Japan. Surely no one is backing the Asian nation to knock out the European powerhouse? Well, no they aren't. All go for the first Belgium win, with Leonardo, Ricardo and ESPN Australia's Steph Brantz predicting comfortable 3-0 victories.
UPDATE: WOW. It wasn't looking good for our pundits there for a while with Japan up 2-0 but an inspired fightback and dramatic injury-time winner sees Belgium break Japanese hearts at the death.
All seven of our experts pick up the points with the Red Devils' win, although none had the exact 3-2 scoreline. No late-game bonus means three of our experts will have to share the spoils today as Gab, Raph and Steph all finish level on 40 points.
