Gabriel Heinze to become new Velez Sarsfield boss

Former Manchester United and Real Madrid defender Gabriel Heinze is to be appointed as the new coach of Velez Sarsfield, the Argentine club have announced.

Heinze, who led Argentinos Juniors to promotion to the Primera Division in the 2016-17 campaign, had previously held the reins of Godoy Cruz de Mendoza.

The 39-year-old takes over from interim coach Marcelo Gomez and inherits a side that has won one and lost four of its last six league games and sits 19th in the 28-team Superliga Division with 14 points from 12 league games.

A Velez statement read: "Gabriel Heinze will become the next technical director [coach] of Velez Sarsfield. The coach will sign an 18-month contract with the club and will be unveiled on Tuesday."

Velez started the campaign under coach Omar De Felippe but he resigned on Nov. 7 following 13 months at the helm after being spat on by a fan of the Superliga side.

An ex-Argentina international, Heinze ended a playing career in 2014 that included spells at Paris Saint-Germain, Madrid and Marseille before he returned to his home country to play for Newell's Old Boys.

His first stint as coach was with top division side Godoy Cruz de Mendoza but it was short-lived, with Heinze dismissed after two months in charge. He won just two and lost six of 10 games at the helm.

His Argentinos Juniors won Argentina's second tier with four games to spare, with Heinze electing to resign at the end of last season.
