Saint-Etienne in pole position for Wahbi Khazri signing

Sunderland's Wahbi Khazri appears primed to join Saint-Etienne on a four-year contract, according to reports in France.

The Tunisia international was one of Africa's outstanding players during the World Cup group stage, despite the Carthage Eagles' early elimination, scoring twice and contributing two assists.

Despite appearing close to a permanent move to Stade Rennais - where he was on loan last season - Khazri now appears set for Les Verts, according to L'Equipe.

The French source report that ASSE will pay €7 million, plus a bonus of €3 million, to Sunderland, who were relegated to the English third tier - League One - last season.

The 27-year-old is understood to be set to sign a contract until 2022 with Saint-Etienne, and will receive an annual salary of €4 million.

He spent last season on loan at Rennes, where he scored nine times in 24 outings, primarily after being played as a striker.

Before moving to Sunderland in 2016, Corsica-born Khazri spent two seasons with Girondins de Bordeaux, having begun his career with SC Bastia.

He featured for France at U-21 level, before making his Tunisia debut in 2013.
