John Terry close to Spartak Moscow signing as free agent - sources

Former Chelsea and England captain John Terry is in talks with Spartak Moscow over a shock move to Russia, sources close to the player have told ESPN FC.

Terry is a free agent after leaving Aston Villa in the summer and a number of clubs have shown an interest in the experienced defender.

Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon were keen to bring in Terry, while Aston Villa have also been credited with a move to bring him back to Villa Park following his successful spell at the Championship club last season.

Terry, 37, had been weighing up whether to continue his career or retire since the end of last season.

Spartak finished in third spot in the Russian Premier League last term and they feel Terry's experience and leadership skills will prove invaluable to the squad this season.

Spartak have started the new Premier League campaign well and are currently in second spot after six games and Terry's potential arrival would help fill the void left by a season-ending injury to Samuel Gigot.

Spartak can offer Terry European football this season after qualifying for the Europa League, where Terry could come up against former England teammate Steven Gerrard with Spartak drawn in the same group as Rangers, now managed by Gerrard.
