Parma Calcio 1913 fans out in force for Serie D debut

Supporters turned out in force to support Parma Calcio 1913 at the weekend as the newly formed club beat Arzignanochiampo away in their Serie D debut.

Parma were wound up this summer after going bankrupt last season, but Parma Calcio 1913 has been formed to fill the void and began life in the fifth tier with a 1-0 win.

The new club -- whose president is Nevio Scala, who coached Parma from Serie B to success in the European Cup Winners' Cup and UEFA Cup in the early 1990s -- were followed by an estimated 1,000 fans for the game at a ground with a capacity of just 1,400.

Riccardo Musetti scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot, with club captain Alessandro Lucarelli, who has remained a Parma player despite their bankruptcy and without being paid for the whole of last season, earning applause as he led the new-look team out.

Italy's Sky Sport has signed an agreement with Parma to televise all of their matches exclusively live this season as they begin what they hope will be a march back to the top flight.

Among the chants of the fans in Arzignano was one calling on Scala to lead Parma into Europe once again.
