Chicago Red Stars' Samantha Kerr sets new NWSL benchmark

Australian national team superstar Sam Kerr achieved a big milestone when she returned to haunt her former team with a hat trick of goals as Chicago Red Stars beat the hapless Sky Blue FC 3-1 on Saturday.

The 24-year-old's second goal made her the first player to notch 50 career goals in the US National Women's Soccer League and the third made her the first to net three hat tricks.

Her latest three-goal haul came a year to the day after she had scored a hat trick for the Sky Blues on the same ground, Yurcak Field, in a 3-2 win over Kansas City.

While Kerr's Chicago outfit are fourth on the ladder, the Sky Blues are struggling badly in her absence, running last and amid an NWSL record 14-game winless streak.

Kerr leads the league with eight goals this season, having won the Golden Boot last season when she tallied a season-record 17 goals.
