Katie Stengel joins Taylor Smith at Newcastle Jets in W-League

W-League club Newcastle Jets have re-signed prolific American import Katie Stengel on a one-year deal for the upcoming season.

Stengel was a driving force behind the Jets' semifinal run last campaign after finishing second in the golden boot with 10 goals in 13 matches.

The star centre-forward recently returned to Australia for her third W-League season after an NWSL stint with the Utah Royals.

Jets women's coach Craig Deans said the 23 games abroad would allow the 26-year-old to hit the ground running for their season opener against Melbourne Victory on Nov. 1.

"She's been performing well over in the NWSL and I've been keeping a close eye on her," Deans said.

"She's back in Australia in good nick and I'm confident she can replicate last season's efforts.

"Those 10 goals last season were crucial to our success. She's one of our most important inclusions in 2018-19."

The addition of the former Western Sydney Wanderers attacker -- six goals in 12 games during the 2016-17 campaign -- follows the Jets' signing last week of United States international Taylor Smith.

Stengel is excited to be reunited with 24-year-old defender Smith at the Jets.

"Taylor is a good friend of mine too and it's fantastic to have her here with me in Newcastle -- I've got a good feeling about this year," Stengel said.
