Mainz keeper Robin Zentner: I mistook penalty spot for the ball in air-kick

Mainz goalkeeper Robin Zentner has said his air-kick in Saturday's Bundesliga match against Borussia Monchengladbach happened when he mistook the penalty spot for the ball.

Video footage showed Zentner kick thin air with the ball nowhere near him during the 1-1 draw at Borussia Park, and the clip quickly went viral on social media.

Fortunately for Mainz, the 25-year-old realised his error and took evasive action just in time with a Gladbach forward bearing down on him. The ball then broke loose, only for the relieved goalkeeper to see a teammate clear it out of play.

Speaking after the match, Zentner said: "The ball was passed back to me with a bit of backspin.

"In the corner of my eye, I could see something white and I thought it was the ball -- but it was the penalty spot and the ball was somewhere else.

"I went to play a pass into the centre but I didn't make contact with the ball, and then I realised it wasn't even there."

The draw leaves Mainz 13th in the Bundesliga, while Gladbach are eighth.
