Daniel Sturridge has been charged with misconduct in relation to alleged breaches of the English Football Association's rules on betting.
The Liverpool striker has until 6 p.m. local time on Nov. 20 to respond to the charges.
"Daniel has given his full and unequivocal cooperation throughout this process and has assured the club he will continue to do so," a Liverpool spokesman said of the charge.
"Daniel has also stated categorically that he has never gambled on football.
"As with any issue of this nature, we will allow the process to be concluded in its entirety before making any further comment."
Those involved in the game at the top eight tiers of English football -- ranging from players and managers, to the match officials and club staff -- are expected to adhere to the FA's rules on betting, which were tightened in 2014.
They are prohibited from betting, either directly or indirectly, on any football match or competition in the world, as well as transfers, the employment of managers and team selection.
Sturridge has been accused of running afoul of FA rules Rule E8(1)(a)(ii) and Rule E8(1)(b), during January 2018.
According to the FA rulebook, Rule E8(1)(a) states "a participant shall not bet, either directly or indirectly, or instruct, permit, cause or enable any person to bet on - (i) the result, progress, conduct or any other aspect of, or occurrence in or in connection with, a football match or competition; or (ii) any other matter concerning or related to football anywhere in the world, including, for example and without limitation, the transfer of players, employment of managers, team selection or disciplinary matters."
And Rule E8(1)(b) adds "where a participant provides to any other person any information relating to football which the participant has obtained by virtue of his or her position within the game and which is not publicly available at that time, the participant shall be in breach of this Rule where any of that information is used by that other person for, or in relation to, betting."
Sturridge completed a loan move to West Bromwich Albion from Liverpool on Jan. 29 before returning to Anfield this summer.
The 29-year-old, whose Liverpool contract expires this summer, has made 12 appearances for Jurgen Klopp's team so far this season.
